Last time I flew Airtran they charged for assigned seating. I now see that their website directs you to SW. If I book via SW but it is an Airtran flight, how will seating work? Have they taken on SW seating style or will I have to pay for seats still if we want to sit together.

THanks

It looks like nothing has changed for Air Trans seat assignments. From Southwest's website:

Seat assignments will be available for purchase for itineraries marketed via Southwest booking channels that contain an AirTran segment. You will be offered the option to purchase an assigned seat on the AirTran-operated portion of a mixed itinerary.

The option to purchase an assigned seat will be made available to you on the confirmation page upon completion of your booking at southwest.com, as well as in the confirmation e-mail you should receive post-purchase. You can also retrieve your itinerary at southwest.com up to 24 hours prior to your flight’s scheduled departure time and purchase a seat assignment for the AirTran-operated portion of a mixed itinerary.

I assume that if you look at your account online, you'll see your options.

When are you going? AirTran's last flight is 12/28/14.

We flew AirTran last month (booked via Southwest) and did not pay for seats. Seats were assigned for us, and all four of us (inc DS12 and DD10) were split up. They tried to get at least two together but couldn't do it due to so many younger kids on the plane. It ended up being fine (I have to say I enjoyed my seat with extra legroom away from my kids!). On the way back we were able to get 3 of the 4 seats together.

You can pay for advanced seat assignment or take your chances at the 24 hour mark.

I see that seating on the Airtan portions of an itinerary are just like they have always been, though a little more expensive. I paid $10 per seat in the back of the plane each way. If you have a connection, you don't pay for the 2nd flight...... $80 extra but at least we are sitting together and we're on a 717 with 2 x 3 seating, so 2 rows on the 2 seat side was well worth it!
