What happens on AirTran, if you DON'T purchase the seat assignment in advance. Do you get whatever seats are left? When I booked, I thought I'd just leave it up to chance. (We leave Saturday morning, nothing like waiting to the last minute to deal with this!) Can I choose seats tomorrow morning when I do online check-in? Do you pay the $6 no matter what, or is that only if you choose seats when you book?

I admit I was being cheap and trying to avoid the extra $6 per person. But now I'm starting to freak out, because it looks like the plane is quite full!

Yes you can choose from whatever is left. No, you will not pay the $6 fee.

You get to choose from whatever is left and not neccessarily will your seats be with your party.I have seen FAMILIES with small kids not buy seats in advance and get split up.

Just make sure you check in at exactly the 24 hour mark. Did you use the Airtran sunshine coupon when you booked? If not, you can go on now and pay for the seats for the way there and they way home using the coupons.

Would they really split you up from a 2 yr old. We fly AT in 2 weeks and didn't pay to select seats. I never even considered them not putting me next to my 2 yr old.

What is a sunshine coupon and how do you get one?

If you check in right at 24 hours, my experience has been that there has always been seats to choose from. However, the airline industry is changing and sometimes I just don't know anymore:confused3 I would be very surprised if you were split from your 2 year old that you have paid for a ticket for (if they are a lap infant this question is totally mute). Could they technically...yes.

Anyways, in answer to your question. Here is the link for the sunshine coupon. You can have it sent to your email and then use it towards your purchased seat assignment:)

If there aren't two seats together at the time you check in, they will split you up. You may be able to ask people to move once you are on the plane, but the computer will not split people up so that you can sit next to your child (especially since the other people paid to sit where they want and you chose not to do so).

If you have a young child and want to avoid any possible unpleasantness, please pay for your seat assignments. The computer that picks you seats does not pay attention to how old people are. You could be put into a position that you are asking someone who paid for their seat to move for you, which really isn't fair. If there are not seats together the FAs will not force someone to move for you. Good luck.:)
