Airtran carryon question

We don't want to pay to check luggage but are traveling with teen girls I know they allow one carry on per person. Can the girls bring a purse in addition to the carry on? We do it on other airlines but have never flown Airtran before and don't really know their specifics. TIA

Yes, we returned yesterday. One carry-on that fits in the overhead, and one personal item (purse) that fits under the seat in front of you.
