I have not flown AirTran in forever and I have a question about carry on bags. If the overhead bins are full do they allow you to gate check your carry on for free?

1) The last time one of my biz partners flew ad bins were full,
. . . it went under the seat
. . . or, he had to paid for checking it.
2) Don't know if this has changed.
3) After all, ALL carry-on is "supposed" to fit under the seat.

Not sure who your partner flew but AirTran does not require all carryon to fit under the seat. And they do gate check for free if the bibs are full

Thank you Orange County Commuter. You are right I can not image trying to cram a 22" piece of carry on luggage under a seat that is only 14 inches wide

Call the airline and ask

All carry on luggage is not required to fit under the seats. Why do you think they have overhead bins?

If the overheads are full, your carry on bag will be checked for free.

As long as your bag is within the size requirements, thy will check it for free. It's not fair to charge you because they ran out of space.
