Any one out there who has flown on Airtran airways? What are they like and would you fly them again. The biggest question is leg room. I'm 6'4" with long legs, will I have enough leg room?

AirTran has one of the newest fleets in the sky... mostly 717's (formerly the MD-80 series before McDonnell Douglas was purchased by Boeing) although they have purchased some 737-800's for their longer routes. Unfortunately, you won't find any more legroom there than on the major airlines. Except for a few routes to the west coast, this is primarily a short-haul airline.

Although they're headquartered in Orlando, their primary hub is here in Atlanta. We love them. They're forcing Delta to be competitive!

I haven't flown on Airtran, but here's a chart showing the typical seat pitch on various airlines: http://www.airlinequality.com/Product/seats_americas.htm

Airtran doesn't look good in coach (economy) class.

In comparison, American Airlines has excellent seat pitch throughout coach -- except on 757 jets, A-300 jets, and any American Eagle aircraft.

United and Ted have excellent seat pitch in the front part of coach, but unless you have elite status in Mileage Plus, these seats are difficult to get.

AirTran sometimes offers inexpensive upgrades to business class (used to be 35.), worth it for more space. Don't know what the current policy is. You should call if you are interested in that.

We used Airtran last fall and are using them again this Nov. The crew was friendly, the plane clean and comfortable and the rates are awesome! They also are running a sale right now so check the rates. The sale ends on Tues.

Good luck!

I flew AirTan twice and will never fly them again. They are notorious for late arrivals and departures. They are like a cattle train, push people on and off. Perhaps the two times I used them were atypical but they did not bother to even vacuum the plane between flights. There was garbage everywhere and the carpets were sticky in places. Other people I know who flew them hated them too.

We flew AirTran in August. Friday the 13th to be exact - when Frances (or Charley - who can keep track anymore!) was battering Florida. Our plane was delayed for hours because we were waiting for an incoming flight from Orlando. Air Tran was very good to us and gave us food vouchers and coupons for a future trip. It was a weather related delay so I don't think they were required to give us anything but it was a nice gesture. I'd fly them again!

I have flown Airtran many times and have not experienced any negatives. In fact, I find their customer service to be much stronger than Delta.
When I had surgery in Boston, I called both airlines to find out about upgrades to business class. Airtran said to call the day before the flight. Delta couldn't talk about it till the day of the flight.
Airtran actually hold back the bulkhead seats in case of people with illnesses or dificulty traveling.
Airtran does have the business class upgrades for an additional $35 a ticket. They are almost impossible to get on prime flights, but can be gotten for some of their less crowded flights. Just get to the airport early.
