Seriously thinking of flying into john wayne airport from SFO
anyone have any good tips for shuttles from the airport to hotels around Katella ?

When we've flown into SNA in the past we've just used a taxi to our DL hotel. The have a flat rate price which I assume also applies to any other hotel nearby.

thank you for that wasnt sure as ive always flown into lax and stayed up in west hollywood area and travelled down for disney

I agree with the above--I used to use SuperShuttle when it was around, then switched to taxi with the flat rate, then uber/lyft. Now I see what the uber/lyft rates are and go with that or taxi, whichever is cheaper. In covid times there was a lot of fluctuation with the ride share prices and it wasn't worth trying to snag one because you never knew if they'd even show up. I think it's pretty much back to normal now, though, and you can get an idea of the cost by going to their site and getting an estimate. The last 3 trips I've used ride share and spent about $27 plus tip. One advantage to a taxi over ride share is that SNA moved the ride share to a location that is a level up and down a ways from Southwest, which is what I fly in on, and taxis are right there where you come out.

If I don't have a friend picking me up, I do Uber/Lyft. It's always around $30 but sometimes one app has surge pricing and the other doesn't. You do have to cross the street and go upstairs in the parking garage for rideshare though so it's just a little less convenient than taxis.

are taxis easy to come by for the return DLR to the SNA airport?
Yes, very easy. If at one of the more upscale hotels the doorman will call one for you if there aren't any standing by.

One thing that may or may not be true any longer is that there was only a flat-rate for taxis going FROM the airport to the hotel, and the rate back was higher. If you were staying on site, however, you could ask at the desk (guest services at the time) for a flat rate taxi voucher going back. As I said, I don't know if any of that still holds true.

If you book through the Yellow Cab app (Ride Yellow) it gives you a firm trip price of $47 either direction. It will hail a cab for you OR, alternatively, if you're at the airport and want a ride you can request a "Trip Code" through the app and walk up to a taxi in the line at the airport and they'll honor the price, you don't even have to ask them about the flat rate.
