We have a family of 6. Can anyone share the most cost effective shuttle from john Wayne airport?

There are many shuttle options that might work for you out of John Wayne. The most well known are Super Shuttle, Prime Time, and Karmel. There is also the Disneyland Express bus service by Grayline. I recently updated the pricing information on the Airport Proximity to DLR and Ground Transportation Information thread. It should give you a good starting point for pricing as well as give you some additional companies to contact if you're looking for the absolute cheapest. Just make sure you read some Yelp reviews in that case.

Taxi (van) is the cheapest....$44 flat rate (and around the same for running the meter if no traffic tie-ups)

If any of the kids are under 8 and would need a car seat, and the only time you'll be in a vehicle is between hotel and airport, just do the DL Express for simplicity.

We have a 4 year old and are thinking about doing Super Shuttle... will we need a car seat?

Definitely. California state law requires "children under the age of 8 to be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat. In addition, as of January 1, 2017, children under 2 years of age shall ride in a rear-facing car seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds OR is 40 or more inches tall. The child shall be secured in a manner that complies with the height and weight limits specified by the manufacturer of the car seat."

Exempt vehicles are those that normally don't have seat belts, so Public Transit (Trains, buses), and large Tour Buses. So The Disneyland Express and the ART Shuttles (including the Toy Story Lot Buses) around Disneyland are exempt.

Things like Prime Time Shuttle and Super Shuttle need Car Seats, also taxis, Uber and Lyft. Some Shuttle services will offer you a car seat if you pre-book their service.

But a 4 year old might qualify for a booster seat, see the link I posted earlier that has the detailed rules dictated by California Law.

This is a really excellent link, Darkbeer. Ironically, it's even better than the CHP's website information on car seats. I'll have to include it in the Transportation thread.

On a personal note, as a parent, I don't trust rented car seats. Luckily, my kiddos are well past needing a car seat or booster (even my 10 year old is well over 5 feet). The problem with a rented car seat is that you can't trust they haven't been in an accident or ill-cared for. Booster seats are easy (rent, get a portable, whatever works), but be cautious in trusting an infant or toddler to a five point harness that has not been in your care.

It's kinda weird that super shuttles rules are not the same as state laws. They recommend a booster for 5 and under.

The Super Shuttle FAQ page says, "While laws vary from state-to-state, we support the strongest safety standard by recommending that small children five years and under be secured in a child restraint seat for transportation. If federal, state, or local law requires your child be secured in a child safety seat, please bring one as it is the parent’s or caregiver’s responsibility. We do not provide child restraint seats and likely will not be able to provide service without one."

I interpret this message to mean that they (Super Shuttle) are not specifically mentioning a particular state, but whatever the state's law on car seats, they recommend a child restraint seat for children under the age of six. Typically a car restraint seat means a car seat which is tethered to your vehicle and then uses a five-point harness to restrain the child. This is opposed to a booster seat which may or may not be tethered to your vehicle and relies on the car's seat belt safety system to restrain the child.

From our experience with them you might want 5 point restraints for even the adults. (Not a huge fan of SS).

Ss aren't the ones who will get the ticket if they are pulled over and the child's parent doesn't have the right restraint.

They operate in many states and can't keep up with it all. That's up to us.

I don't know if it's different for Supershuttle because they're a livery, but it's a ticket for everyone in the vehicle over the age of 16.

I like SS, I have used them 3 times this year and plan on using them again in February. I have no children requiring car seats.

Thanks 3Tinks! I was looking for this information (but for LAX) so the link to the thread is much appreciated. :)
