For those of you that are pin traders/collectors.......
Have you ever run into any trouble taking your lanyards w/pins on board in your carry on luggage?
I have just started thinking about this since DH and our two DSs have started accumulating pins so they can start trading during this next trip. They will each have a lanyard full of pins to bring with them.

I assume you would need to let the security person know that you have pins because of the large amount of metal.
And, with the $ investment, I would hate to put the pins in checked bags just incase the luggage was lost.

Any thoughts?

Chris

Daughter has a very large collection she travels with and it has never been a problem. They may want to look in the bag with all the pins but usually they just look quickly and you are on your way. Don't put them in your suitcase if you want to see them again. Carry them on the plane with you.

You will have no problem with the pins. Just about any airline that flys into MCO is use to seeing the pin bags.

My DDs bring pins to trade with them all the time. I have never had a problem and never had to alert security. The only problem we have had is with 800 speed film. Apparently it gives off some sort of reflection that the scanner cannot read through. My one DD brought about 20 canisters of this film to WDW on our last trip and we were pulled aside. EACH canister had to be swabbed and checked. I think she'll be using 400 speed from now on!

800 and other high speed filmas like 1000 or infrared should not go through the scanner it may ruin it. I once took all infrared of the world and it is so sensative the canister cannot even be opened so that caused a big hubub at the screen station BUT that was prior to Sept 11th and after alot if somplaining on my part they did not make me opern my canister. Now forget it. But anyway just a warning about film going through the xray i could damage some memories. Better to let them hand search it.

Thanks everyone!
Its good to hear that taking the pins on as carry-on will not be a problem at all.

twice last year i carried trading pins, disney, in checked luggage.
first trip i had 350 pins with me. too heavy for me to lug around in my carry on and second trip cut back on the pins to 200. again placed in checked in luggage.

bags not searched/ nothing missing. very at ease with peace of mind checking them this way.

macraven, I suggest you rethink putting your pins in your luggage. It is very easy for thieves to take it out. Don't put anything in your luggage you don't want to lose.

When I used to carry a lot of pins I checked them. There is no way I am carrying that weigh as carry on.

That said, I got over it! I don't take many anymore and if someone steals them then I don't have to worry about them (I have started just giving them away as my way of spreading "Disney Magic")

A vast majority of the traders on the Collectors Board will agree that it's best to have your pins in your carry-on instead of your checked baggage. We've never had any problems with security saying we have to check the bag with the pins or confiscating them for whatever reason. Be ready for security to do a thorough search of your bag, though, and let them know you have collectible lapel pins that will show up as a glob of metal so it's not too much of a surprise.
