Help! My parents want to visit Mt. Rushmore in the fall, but I can't figure out what airports are available? Using Rapid City from Phoenix, the airfare is about $380 r/t. Is that normal? Is that the best/only alternative?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks for reading!

How far would they want to drive? Some to check would be Billings MT, in ND there are Fargo, Minot or Bismark. The capital is Pierre sometimes they get a little more air traffic. Denver or St Paul/Minn might be options but would be a further drive.

Thanks for the ideas!

Denver may be the best bet (SW flies into there), but it's about 400 miles I think! That would make it a 2-day drive for them. I'll check into the other ones.

We were just in that area a couple of months ago. I have family in NE Wyoming, about an hour and half from Mt Rushmore. We flew into Denver because Rapid was way out of line. About $800 each R/T. Denver was $350 or so. It was about a 6 hour drive to Sundance, WY so another hour & half. It's not a bad drive, we saw buffalo on the way, I've seen them many times, but my DW was estatic. We had to stop and take pictures and watch them. That driving time includes stopping for food and stretching to. Anywhere you fly into other than Rapid will be a drive. Good luck.

Unfortunately, SW doesn't fly into Denver...yet! ;)

My husband said that Denver (driving the 400+) would be the best bet if the $380 was too expensive. He seemed to think that the price was pretty good for a round trip from Phoenix to Rapid City, but Denver should be cheaper.

Good luck!

Rapid City is the closest airport. The other are a long way away. Minneapolis would be a good 10 hour drive, Sioux Falls a good 8 hours. Let me tell you, it is one of the most boring drives I've ever done. Rapid City is about 1/2 hour from Mt Rushmore.

Beautiful country, I spent an entire summer there during college.

Driving east to west thru SD is one drive with little to see.

I'd fly into Rapid, rent a car, and drive the beautiful Needles highway.
