Airport Car Service in NY

Hi gang,
First off, welcome to my city! Nyc Yellow Taxi's have a "flat fee" from Jfk airport to midtown/times square. The fee is around $40 last time i checked. They will not help you with your luggage or meet you at the gate, you have to go curbside and to the taxi stand. This site should explain more and help you with more info. it is Nyc's offical website, reguarding taxi's.
http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtml

In the past i had friends use triple 7's. (212) 777-7777, punch the number into a search tool and thier website should come up. I have never used them myself, so can't say much about them myself. Friends have always had nice things to say about them.

*** This does'nt happen too often, but just a warning. Use caution as if any taxi driver notice's you are from overseas, they might try to raise the set price once at your hotel. Calmly and nicely Remind your driver that this is illegal and your only paying the set price agreed too, otherwise your contacting the better business bureau and the taxi and limo commission. Good luck and have fun in the city. If you have any other question's, i will try to help.

Does anybody know how long it takes to get from Times Square to JFK? (on a weekday morning).

Our flight leaves JFK at 9am and I asked the car service company their recommended pickup time and they said 8am :confused3 I thought it was about an hour to the airport which means we would be arriving at the airport when our plane is taking off.

CAREFUL!

Normally the check in counters close 30 mins prior to departure, meaning you should be at the airport at least an hour, hour and a half before your flight to get checked in and through security.

However, JFK has a 60 minute security check in time before departure if you're travelling with bags. So if your flight is at 9am they'll be closing the check in at 8am.

This means you'd need to be at the airport by 6.30/7am at the absolute latest to make sure you're all checked in, especially if there is a line. Imagine if the check in closed at 8am and all 200-odd passengers showed up at the airport at 10 to 8.

According to my little travel bible here, they say allow 60-90 minutes travel time at this time of the day since it's morning rush hour. That is of course assuming it's a weekday.

I'd be questioning that pick up time.

Edited to add:

What airline are you flying? I found this on the Delta website: https://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/itineraries_checkin/requirements/

I'll be honest thats cutting it really close. I would say you should leave at least 2 hours before your departure time at jfk. To be honest Jfk is hit or miss, plus traffic can be terrible at that time here in nyc and if there is just one vechile accident holding up traffic, it can cause traffic jams and so on. We usually leave our house here in nyc 2 hours before departure. We always take the 6 am flight out of jfk. Sometimes we found ourselfs thru security and sitting at the gate for a hour and a half and other times, we were running to the gate after clearing security with 10 minutes to spare.

This website might help you make a better decision with what time to leave for the airport.

I did'nt really answer your question with my last post. According to map quest, this is actually copied and pasted right from thier site.

Not so sure if i agree with 28 minutes, i would say more like 45 minutes. This is of course without any traffic, if your driver is on time and takes this certain route. At 8 am, it's rush hour in nyc.

HI,

I live in NYC and always use Carmel or Dial 7's to get to the airport
It is also very easy to get a NYC yellow taxi to and from the airport, and they are cheaper.
You will just have to wait in line at the taxi stand at the airport

These 3 options are all reliable

If you are worried about your bags, ask a skycap at baggage claim to help you with them and they will take you to your car or taxi line

I agree, i would give yourself an hour to get to JFK, you never know how the traffic is getting through the city and out of the city

Thanks Oz-Kateer,

We are always at the airport (domestically) at least an hour to an hour and a half before the flight so when I got that time suggestion I was :scared1:
We are flying with AA, we are flying first too, so there should't be much of a check in line and I think there is a security checkpoint for FC passengers too, which should speed it up (mind you it's probably still a long line :rotfl: )

But I think if we leave at 6.30am that gives us plenty of time and we can grab breakfast at the airport if we are there early.

I didn't know about the hour before security cut off for luggage, so thanks so much for that info :flower3:

Thanks for your replies. I had just posted a question on the Transportation board before I had noticed all of the replies here, should have visited here first. Oh well!

I think if we leave at about 6.30am for our 9am flight then we should be fine, fingers crossed. I did have a bit of a :scared1: when I saw the 8am suggestion as we do like to be at the airport in plenty of time and on a weekday morning I was worried about the traffic. So if we allow 1.5 hours travel time, we will probably be there in 30 minutes :lmao: But if we allowed 30 minutes it would take 1.5 hours :rotfl2: most likely.

I appreciate your replies, thank you :goodvibes

May I jump in here and take the opportunity to ask our New York natives a few questions...

How common are the 5 passenger cabs and taxi-vans? As there 14 of us, we will need the bigger cars.

Do they add on a surcharge for being able to accommodate extra passengers?

There are some mini-vans and small SUV's
The vans hold 5 people and the SUV's 4 people
YOu may have to wait a while to get them though

There is no charge for extra passengers and there is not charge if they handle your bags, it is customary to tip them though especially if they do help you load and unload your bags.

I have a stroller and always give a little extra when they help instead of watching me struggle!!

If you have 14 people you may be better off hiring a large van from a limo company, carmel and dial 7's should have some

The rate from JFK is $45 plus tolls (roughly $8) and a $0.50 surcharge and since you will need 3 or 4 cabs you should check to see what a large van would cost!

Enjoy NYC!!! PM me with other questions even about places to eat, see etc!

We have just used Wirolimo this last week for a return trip from JFK to Times Square. We arrived Sunday late afternoon and there was alot of traffic, (maybe due to the US Open starting), and it took about 50mins to 1 hour. On the return trip our flight was due out at 8:30am so we booked the car for 5:15am. It only took 1/2 hour to get to JFK. Check was easy and fast.

Wirolimo were very professional, courteous and on time, if not early. The cars were new(ish) and clean. A reminder/re confirmation email was sent the day before travel. We highly recommend them.
