Airplane Distractions

I love to fly, but hate turbulance. I usually bring a cd player & a book and that usually takes care of most of the flight. This trip I'm borrowing my brother's portable dvd player and will bring a few movies with me. The flight is about 3 hours, so a good movie will take up most of the trip. popcorn::

I don't know what it is about flying, when I hit that seat, I'm usually out even before the plane takes off! And this is with NO meds, nothing ! Last time I flew, I slept the entire 26 hour flight to the Amazon. The 2/1/2 hour flight to WDW will be my nap for the rest of that day. I sleep better on a flight ,than I do at home! I should trade in my queen size bed at home ,for a seat in coach. :)
I don't mind flying, but I am the same way. I have fallen asleep before taking off a few times. I bring an inflatable neck pillow that keeps your head up comfortably. You actually have to underinflate them quite a bit on the ground since once you are at altitude, the thin air really expands them.

DW is even worse. If she could fall asleep in the aisle heading to the seat, she would. Whenever we drive for any real distance, she is out like a light.

To the OP, if you like Sudoku or crosswords, bring one of those puzzle books. Or bring a good book.

I totaly understand, I too hate to fly. I have been perscribed Xanex from my doctor and it worked ok for me. It was nice in the fact that I was ok for my son. It did not take the total edge off for me so I will go back to my doctor before our Dec trip. Other than that I can not offer much as far as distractions go. Everone else has posted good advice some of which I will also follow. Have a great trip and it will all be worth it when you see that castle!!!!!

My husband has the same fear. He is very afraid of heights and flying. He cant go up 17 floors in an elevator without panicking. I have hear Zanax is for panic attacks and is short acting, about 2 hours. If you get a script from your doctor ask if you should take one dose before you go to see how you react to it. Ihave heard mixed side effects of the medication ( no real effect to sleeping for hours) good luck, I have to get my husband to the doctor, we leave in 12 days!

I ordered a book recently from Amazon called "Ask the Pilot: Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel". It's is written by Patrick Smith, who is an airline pilot, who explains how things work in the world of airports and airplanes. I haven't read it yet, but the skimming that I have done shows it to be very matter-of-fact answers to common questions.

HTH!!

It will be me and my boyfriends first time flying in 10 days and he is absolutely terrifed, while I'm over here extremely excited. He wants to just sleep the whole way, but I'll probably be talking a mile a minute so I'm not sure he'll get much sleep  Magazines and puzzle books are good ideas, though. I might bring my ipod, too.

If you want to work on overcoming your fear of flying then check out this free site and their message board. There are plenty of DISers over there too!

www.takingflight.us is the site and www.takingflight.us/forums is the message board.

They have commercial airline pilots, a psychologist, doctors, nurses, business travelers, small plane pilots and plenty of recovering fearful flyers. Come join us! :)

thank you clarabellecowfan, this is an awesome site and I recommend it to anyone else in this thread who is afraid to fly!
