Airline Refund - deceased ticketholder

Does anyone have experience they would be willing to share on getting a refund on a ticket purchased for someone who is now deceased?

I am assuming they will request a copy of the death certificate.

What if our hearts are not in the trip anymore and we all just want to cancel, will they allow that? There were a total of 7 of us on the original ticket confirmation. The airlines in NW.

If they are non refundable tickets you may have to talk with a supervisor to get anything for the ticket.

As for the rest of you they may allow you to put the funds towards a future ticket minus the $100 change fee and the difference in the fare.

I think safetymom is right on-target. They'll refund the ticket for the deceased, but generally won't do much more than that. Their margins are too lean to do much more.

That was my experience when my mom passed away last year. AirTran refunded her ticket, mine had a $50 change fee. I had bought insurance, so I submitted a claim for my ticket.

We had to submit an original (no copy) death certificate at a Delta counter (No mail or fax allowed). They made a copy of it there and refunded the funds.

I don't know the answer to your question but wanted you to know that I am sorry for your loss. Is your trip a short time away? If so, I could fully understand your hearts not being in it. If it is not too close in time, try to hold off and maybe your group will have a different persepctive with time. What would your loved one wanted you to do? That said, I know if it we me, no matter when I took the trip, it would be overshawdowed by the absence of my loved one since he/she were to be a part of the group.
