you are correct. Of the US legacy carriers, currently US Airways and UA are implementing the fee beginning in May 2008. (US Airways for domestic and international routes, UA for North American routes)
However many of us suspect that other US legacy carriers will follow suit
Yay!! I'm flying Delta so thats good to know about the second bag fee isn't with them. I wish I wasn't an over packer but having a 2 year old makes it hard not to over pack. But that's just me. I'm just so darn worried that something I might leave behind to make room in my suitcase might turn out to be the item that I needed the most on my trip. Has anyone tried those travel space bags? I was thinking about buying some and doing a run thru with them to see how well I can pack my suitcase with them.
I have had mixed results with space bags. The ones from Target don't last for more than a half dozen trips, it seems, and don't expell a lot of air. The Eagle Creek ones are much better, albeit more expensive.
Just remember that if you use a lot of them, you do run the risk of going over 50lbs, and will be subject to overweight fees.
Doesn't Southwest allow 3 bags per person? I know at one time they did while others allowed 2.
Whether it is 2 or 3 of us traveling to Disney I usually have 3 bags total. One suit case with clothes, one rolling duffel with some foods, cups, toilet paper (I have a delicate bottom ) and odds and ends used at Disney, and one shoulder duffel with pillows, sheets and blankets in it. Even it it was just me traveling I would probably have 2 bags. The suit case and the shoulder duffel.
Airline charges are getting so ridiculous now. Not only are rates are going up they are starting nickeling and diming everything. American charges $2 a bag for curbside checking. No more free 1/2 oz bags of peanuts! I wonder when they are gonna start charging for a soft drink?!
I thought the OPs question was already answered. Fedx ground is $26.84 for a 50 lb box from PHL to Disney. Shipping time is 3 days. Standard overnight is over $200.
Paying the airline fee is cheaper then the alternatives. Old suitcases can weight 15-20 lbs empty. Getting a new suitcase may allow the OP to function with fewer bags without having to significantly reduce what's taken. Maybe 3 bags for 2 passengers instead of 4. Getting a duffel bag that is filled to the largest dimensions allowed as carryon luggage and filling it with the heavier stuff (shoes) may also help.
I agree some people need more then one bag but others will take whatever the maximum luggage allowed by the airline.
thank goodness I can bring a suitcase for each of my DD's and they are still young with small size clothes.
so that gives me 4 suitcases (up to 50 lbs) for "stuff". DH has agreed to wear the same shirt every day if I pack him clean skivvies. LOL I may have to pay the extra fee if I don;t have room on the way back.
I hate to carry to much on the plane, usually only 1-2 things betwen the 4 of us but I'll have to revise my prefernces and bring a carry on for each of us.
