Here I am 4 months ahead of time worried about air tickets for my family of 5 for July 4th week. Should I remain confident that I will find lower priced tickets sometime between now and then?; or, am I only fooling myself, and I should go ahead and snap up the cheapest I can find?

I woulf buy the cheapest you can find now. Tickets are bound to become limited the closer you get, which will only increase the price.

Buy them and if they get any lower, most airlines will credit you back the difference.

AirTran will not credit you the difference in a sale price after you've bought the tix (yes, I tried). You can pay a change fee of $50 - per segment but, that would have to be a heck of a sale to make that worthwhile.

I thought only SW had this system of "rebooking" fares?...are there others out there that do so too?

Jetblue will also give you a credit if your flight price goes down. If it is the exact same flight and times, there is no change fee. You have 1 year to use the credit. I have done this several times -- gotten the date and time I wanted, and then watched to see if the price goes down. For our trip to California and back coming up this summer our airfare was less than half price because I was able to use credits I got on Jetblue when our Christmas flights dipped in price and I called them.

I just booked Delta for 6/30 to 7/8. Saw an incredible rate of $158 round trip, nonstop, so I did NOT wait!!
