Airfare help wanted....

I have only booked a flight once in my life....and it was one of those situations where I was sure I wouldn't have to cancel, so I got the cheapest fare and didn't worry about any restrictions, etc....

My situation now is this.....we have a trip to WDW planned for next Memorial Day. We usually drive from PA, but for 3 days we'd much prefer to fly! There are 4 of us and we want to get the best airfare deal possible. My first question is how I go about doing this. My second is this: there is a possibility (and its not a predictable one unfortunately) that we may be moving to another state before next May and would no longer need the tickets....or we would either want to change our flights to another city or change the dates and give them to someone else to use...namely my parents who will be joining us in FL later that year. How does this all work? If I get the cheapest "restricted" fares would we be totally out of luck in the event that we have to cancel?

Sorry, but I'm completely ignorant of the way these things work...and to look at the run down of restrictions listed on places like Travelocity I might as well be trying to read Japanese.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me a little lesson in this!

I would probably wait awhile to see what your move involves. When the time gets closer, seek a travel agent if you are unfamiliar with or do not feel comfortable with the internet travel websites.

I would not buy anything and then have to pay a penalty to make a change.

Actually I'm fine with the idea of using online travel sites.....as long as I have some help unscrambling their secret code ;)

I've never used a travel agent...but flights are just one area of travel that I've never ventured into.

And it wouldn't be that big of a deal to me to have to pay a penalty to change....because I'm just as likely to not have to change anything as I am to have to change it. I guess I just want to make sure I won't be putting myself in a situation where I'd be spending $800 on tickets that we couldn't do anything with.

I would wait to get the tkt for now. once issued its highly unlikely you would be able to change the names on the tkt. it has been done but its very hard to get them to do it. wait until you have a better idea of what your situation is going to be. and I use the online travel web sights of expedia and usair and united and have never had any problems.
