My mom heard on the radio that airfare was about to go way up so to buy your tickets now no matter how far in advance. Is this true? I did go on Airtran.com and booked our flights for our October trip. It was about $30 higher per person compared to our most recent December trip. Is anyone thinking of booking ahead because of these rumoured increases?

Yes, it is true. Jet fuel prices have skyrocketed and that hasn't yet been reflected in all airfares yet. Also, the industry itself is bleeding red-ink badly. Even JetBlue lost money this past quarter, because they didn't charge enough to cover their costs. Consequently, we can expect to see airlines raising airfares, and reducing capacity/curtailing service if necessary.

I posted a link to a USAToday cover story the other day discussing just this. The airlines have been slowly raising fares and so far they are still flying full.

I saw an article on the news about this also. I bought our airfare last week and still got a pretty good deal on it through United...less than what we had budgeted anyways. Even though the trip is in September, I didn't want to take a chance.

My trip isn't until 9/29 and I've given the go ahead for my TA to bite the bullet and book my air fair. I hate to do it, but I've been watching the prices increase and I know that they will not get down to where I am used to seeing them.

Makes long distance relationships a pain in the patootie, let me tell you!
