Airfare Costs

I am paying $900 for the 4 of us to fly out of Rochester (ROC). It's worth the drive. It would cost me over $2000 to fly from Montreal

I found out to my sorrow last year that flight prices in march/April are much higher than January. So that's going to account for some of your price hikes.

I've been watching prices for March 2013 and it is RIDICULOUS. Last year for the same time, flight from DTW to Orlando were $300 or so for a loooong time. That was the going rate. I ended up paying $280. Been watching for te past few months and the going rate seems to be over $400.

We're flying out of Seattle instead of Victoria or Vancouver, and then flying back home from Ft. Lauderdale. $99 each way. Family of 5 = $1450 after taxes.

It's our first time to florida so we're quite happy to fly into MCO and come home from FLL.

I was shocked to read on the AirTran website if you see a lower fare that it is still $75 to make a change to your reservation! That is crazy, they should offer a price guarantee.

Our Airtran flights for our December trip went down by $20 pp after purchase. We called Airtran's customer service and they credited us the difference ($60 total) to a special credit account that we used for upgrading to business class at the 24-hour check in point. No $75 change fee was charged.

I don't necessarily agree that airlines should offer a price guarantee. I like to think is a bonus from the ones that do (Southwest, Airtran and Jetblue). When I buy a new car, if the price goes down or the auto manufacturer offers a special deal (like when the model years are discounted), they don't refund me back any money. Airlines are in business to make a profit like anyone else. I do like patronizing airlines that offer me a credit for the difference as a courtesy, though. A very good customer service practice :thumbsup2.

Well I like the idea of the credit, I can only hope I get the deal you did. I see in your TR for Dec that you stayed at the Days Hotel in Buffalo, how was it?

I bet if you call and inquire sweetly, you will get your credit with no problems and no change fee :) . Lots of folks on the Transportation board have reported similar success when their Airtran prices went down.

The Days Inn at the Buffalo airport was just fine :thumbsup2. Nothing fancy, and the property itself is nowhere near new, but everything (from the common areas to the room) were very clean and the staff were great. Also a big pool and a nice, hot, bubbly hot tub. Shuttle was excellent, breakfast was good, and the onsite restaurant was also surprisingly very good. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

We are paying over $2400 for 2 adults & 2 kids from Edmonton.

If it makes you feel any better (it won't but I'll tell you anyway!) our family is coming over from England for our wedding in July and people that booked early are paying around £800, my future in-laws. Poked this weekend on the same flight for £1250!!

It's not just Canadian flights that are extortionate !! (told you it wouldn't make you feel better! ;))

That Edmonton fare is pretty typical, depending on the time of year. Right now United has YEG to MCO fares for around $517 pp everything included, so that would be a bit cheaper than yours. ;)

Darn it ! Story of my life! Lol

If it makes you feel any better, we've paid $3300 for 4 over Christmas, so you're still better off than that.

For the last while United has had the lowest fares for Edmonton to Orlando, connecting in Chicago, Denver, Houston, and now New York. We generally like to fly through Houston or Denver. Generally better weather than the east coast or mid west has in winter. I liked the red-eye connecting in Houston, it got us into Orlando before noon without needing an extra away from work. Helps if you can sleep on a plane, though.:rolleyes2

Have a great trip! :)

We booked in August for this coming May, and it was $1235 for 2 of us return from St. John's. That was taxes in,seats with extra leg room, and Maple Leaf Lounge access.

The same flights now are /41100 pp return, without the extras. Plus, the schedule left is horrible..you lose your first day in travel (ie leaving here 1:00 pm, arriving in Orlando 10:30 or 11:30 pm). Our flight plan has us leaving here early in the am, nap on the plane, and land in Orlando at 12:40 pm. Planning to drop our bags at the hotel and hit the closest theme park by 3 pm :)

You definitely need to watch pricing. I "hear" that pricing seems to be lowest mid week Tues-Thurs. I don't know if that's true or not, but I've heard that many times. And then prices if you fly during the week are generally lower than flying on the weekend.

Buffalo is my airport of choice. I'm only 30 min from it.
Jet Blue and Southwest will have your cheapest flights. You'll pay less if you're willing to take a flight with a lay over. I don't fly well so I make sure I get direct flights.

I booked my flights at the end of October for this coming May.
I managed to get $110 each way, so that's only $220 a person. I was very happy with that price, and for direct flights. Today the same flights are coming up at $320 a person.

For our Christmas trip, Airtran was cheaper than both Jetblue and Southwest for the first leg of our journey (Buffalo to Orlando). Cheaper by a significant margin, I might add.

While it wasn't my favourite airline experience, I wouldn't count them out if the price was right. Definitely worth comparing with Jetblue and Southwest before purchasing.

How do you know when opening day is for flights?

You mean when dates become available for booking? I just go onto the airline's website and play with imaginary flights. Most legacy carriers move their calendar ahead a day, each and every day.

For example, United is booking to Dec 24 today, tomorrow the 25th will show up and so on. Air Canada goes a bit further into next year if I recall correctly. The budget carriers like Southwest release their dates in blocks.

Hope this helps.:)

Wish I knew for Southwest. Jetblue is open for my dates but too high right now so we'll see what Southwest comes in with. If you go on the transportation board and start a thread asking somebody usually knows. Or you can call.

Whaddya say we meet up at Typhoon Lagoon that last week of August, and enjoy a margarita while we're stretched out on a couple of beach chairs? :beach:

Soooo happy you have another trip to look forward to! :thumbsup2

Yes that's what I meant thanks. I need flights for next Feb so just curious when those opened up ... right now Jetblue only goes until Sept. So Im assuming sometime in the summer they will open up for the winter schedule ..... but I'd like to know when the opening day is so I can get my flights :)
