has anyone ever flown with AirTran before? I found some cheap tickets and would like to buy them but have never even heard of them.

I usually fly with United or AA..

Thanks for any info you may have!

I fly them all the time... direct from Indianapolis to Florida. Nice planes and great to upgrade to 1st class for $40... worth it!

We've flown on them a few times to Disney. They seem to change the scheduled departure times alot but they do email you to let you know. In the past, they let me change our departure time, sort of re-book but on the same day or day before or after, because the time they had rescheduled it to was inconvienent to us.

Depending on how many suitcases you'll be checking in per person, you may want to look into that. Southwest has great deals & their luggage allowance is better than AirTran.

I've flown Air Tran several times, and never had a problem.

In Michigan, they offer a direct roundtrip flight from Flint to Orlando, which is great. Flint airport is much smaller and easier to get around in, than Detroit.

They've never changed any of the flight times that I was on, and have never lost my luggage.

Any of their flight attendants that I've encountered have always been helpful and polite.

I flown airtan alot and loved them, just flew united and would take airtran over united in a heart beat!!

Thanks everyone! I was hoping for some answers like these!

Luckily for us, only one bag is needed per person....for the first checked bag it's $15 pp right? Now is that one way, or roundtrip?

AirTran:
  • Some people think the airline's great.
  • Some people think it's unsafe.
  • Some people think that they change flights around too much without notifying people.

I used to be a huge Delta fan. After flying AirTran twice I would take them over Delta any day. Quicker loading IMO and they serve better food too ;)

I flew Airtran one time and connected through Atlanta. It was a nightmare. The airline was fine, Atlanta was not.

We have flown ATran in the past and had flights changed. Typically will use SW if at all possible because no charge for bag fee.

We flew Air Tran for the first time on our last trip...from Phoenix through Atlanta to Orlando.
I have never had to pay for seat assignments before  That was odd.
The only thing that was not pleasant about them, was I paid for specific seats and then when our boarding passes arrived at Disney, they weren't what I chose.
They had to reassign us at the check in counter. So in the end it worked well, but I was stressed all morning about it.

I have flown them probaby 4 times and this is the ony issue I have had w/ them.

so i decided to not choose the advanced seat assignments...what would you think is the likeliness of my party of three sitting together?

I read somewhere that 24 hours prior to your flight you can choose your seats, but how do you choose what seats you want, when other passengers have chosen their seats in advanced? are those specific seats just 'unavailable' when choosing your seats?

Sorry for all the questions! This is the first airline that i've flown with that has given you the option of choosing your own seats for a fee!

Baggage fee is one way so if you can, bring smaller suitcases to carry on, also, one less line to stand in at the airport.

You can do online check-in and pay for your checked luggage right online. You can go to a map of the plane and get your seats right there. We just got off Air Tran this evening from our trip. They load by zones not rows so the window seats load, then the center seats, then the aisle seats so it goes much faster. We didn't have any problems getting seats by each other doing the 24 hour check in online.

We flew Air Tran two weeks ago on our trip to WDW.

We had this problem too, but they did not email us to let us know. They rescheduled our departure from Orlando FOUR TIMES and we did get letters, but we got NO notification at ALL of a very significant change. They had rescheduled our flight into Orlando so that we actually would have missed an entire day of vacation because they changed it from a noon arrival to an 11pm arrival.

We were pretty upset because we had not received any notification of this change until we got the final confirmation packet about a week before our trip and this was a very significant change if it means we essentially lose the money we paid for one day's worth of vacation. We really felt like we were geting ripped off. Since we had booked the whole trip through Disney, we called them and they straightened it out, but it was stressful and based upon that, I don't know if I'd want to fly them again.

The way there the actual flight was no problem at all.

The way back, different story. Got on our flight in Orlando and shortly after leaving the gate, had to roll back because there was something wrong with the co-pilot's seat belt. Okay. Takes 30 minutes to fix. Get back out, start to roll, then stop. Something wrong with a computer. Takes 30-45 minutes to fix. Get in the air. Pilot comes on and announces that he knows a lot of us will miss our connecting flights but to stop asking the FAs for info because they don't have it. Okeydokey. That's special.

Get to Atlanta and I have to say the CSR was quite helpful. She got us on a plane to LGA, then to MKE which would get us home before the next direct flight to MKE. And we discovered that we were now in first class. Yippee!

The first class radio sets were, however, broken. One of the FAs was a total SNOT. And I do mean snot. I wanted to pop him one. The other FAs were very nice. Next leg of flight, I got stuck in coach, while dd and dh were in first. The FAs in coach acted/looked like they would rather be on a chain gang than serving us.
