Has anyone flew out of DTW on Air Tran yet?? I know they just started there the first part of November and I was wondering how it went! Do they have a curb check in? Was it busy? any tips you can give us would help! We are flying them in Feb. and am kind of worried about it! thank you in advance! :flower: :flower:

Martha 7, I am going to try a different approach to this question, so you will see me ask it a different way in a different post. We will see if this works, wish me luck :flower: !!!

Have you called Air Tran? I also found information about AirTran on the DTW website. What exactly are your concerns?

I have flown AirTran many times with no problems. If you tell us what your concerns are maybe you would get some answers.

We fly Airtran out of Flint whenever we go to THE WORLD; just got a great rate of $75. nonstop each way for Jan. its a great airline, very clean and on time !!! I'm sure that you will enjoy them too.

Air Tran just started in DTW and I was wondering about curb check in, any glitches we need to be worried about, how early do we need to be there? Is it busy? What concorse is it in , in the Smith terminal? That is all i can think of right now, I guess I just wanted some reassurance from someone who flew out of Detroit with Air Tran, and tell me don't worry, everything is going to be fine!!! Thanks for the answers!! :flower: :flower:

Yep, they are in the old Smith Terminal.....the absolute nastiest terminal in the modern world. They took over the old DELTA gates when Delta moved to McNamara. Thankfully the Smith is due for demolition when the new terminal comes on board in a couple of yers. In the meantime AirTran is there along with SPIRIT and SWA.

the absolute nastiest terminal in the modern world

And, nastier than many in the developing world, too.

My doctoral advisor grew up in southern India, and went to IIT-Madras for his undergraduate degree before coming to the States for his Ph.D., where he remains as a professor at Carnegie Mellon. While there are pockets of wealth with good infrastructure in India, the state of Tamilnadu (where Madras is located) is not one of them.

He visited me shortly after I joined Michigan's faculty. As he lives in Pittsburgh, he flew in on USAir, which was (and I believe still is) located in the Smith terminal. I picked him up at the gate; this was the good old days before TSA. His immediate reaction to Smith Terminal?

"You realize, of course, that we have better airports in India."

When they blow it up, I'm hoping to buy the souvenir DVD. ;)

When the Smith Terminal was new (Early 60's I beleve) it was a terribly designed terminal. What a way to welcome people to the "New Detroit!". Im supprised they didn't demolish it and have the New midfield project done in time for the Superbowl..
