I found some rates that look pretty good, but does the $15 fee per bag go to each leg of your flight? so if there is 4 of us, and we have connecting flights both ways, so that would be 60 x 4 for a total of $240.00...?? can you pick seats with airtran or is that an additional charge too???

The $15 is from from origin to destination. So if you have a connecting flight with Airtran they transfer your bags for you at no cost. On the way home it's the same so for 1 person it would cost you $30 to check a bag. They're carry-on allowance is pretty big (55') so there's 3 of us leaving on the 26th & we're only checking 1 bag & taking a large carry-on each to cut the cost.

It's $6 per person each way to choose your seats but I've read if you book thru Kayak.com for some reason you don't pay the seat charge? I booked right thru Airtran & paid $12 for each of us to have our seats assigned.

Thanks, i did just finally get thru to airtran. she confirmed exactly what you said "15 for each segment, connecting flights don't get charged". She did say that you can go on line 24 hrs before your flight and pick your seats for no charge, or do it when you check in at the airport.... there is 4 of us, with two being young adults, 12 and 16, so not sure if i want to take the chance of not sitting together..... thanks for your help!

You can also book through Kayak which links you to AirTran and book your seats for free at time of reservation.

When I flew solo in June, I did not pay for a pre-selected seats & I ended up with better seats at the 24 hour check-in because AT does not have all seats available if you pre-select. (The first several rows, the last couple of rows, exit row seats & the middle seats on one side of the plane if the seats are 6 seats across rather than 5 seats across. The latter is in case in the event AT changes the plane to a smaller plane in case bookings are down.) That being said, I did pay for the pre-selected seats for our January flight because we are flying with our DDs (9 & 7) - as I did not want to take the chance of being separated from them.

Thanks for the info on the seats. I have been debating if I need to go and prepurchase my seats, but I am going to wait. There is only 2 of us flying and if we don't sit together it is no big deal....two adults and that is $24 I can have at Disney:banana:

If it were just my DH & I, I wouldn't pre-book my seats, but because we have a 3.5 year old we do "just in case"

The seat fee question is a non issue if you haven't booked yet at all. Book through Kayak as previously mentioned and get the seat selection for free, you can then change or move to different seats at any time without paying an aditional fee. The question of to select or not need not even be asked if you haven't booked already.

DOH!! I forgot all about that!!!! I'm looking for flights down & back in the last week of March (spring break) and I got in such a panic the other night that when I found a good deal on our RETURN flight I booked it right on the Air Tran website (but I had an $18 credit to use from where they refunded us the fee from where we upgraded in Aug.)!!

But DOH again I say!!:headache: Could've been $18 less. I will have to remember whenever I book our flight DOWN to go thru Kayak!! Thanks for the reminder!!

You still can still use a credit if you go through Kayak since it links you directly back to AirTran's website.

dioxide45 is 100% correct, and it's an important distinction: Kayak.com doesn't sell anything to the end user (aka, us :)). They make all their money when we click through from their site to the service provider. We're buying directly from that provider, whether it's AirTran, or Hilton, or Orbitz, or Hertz... a perq for the AirTran passenger who links to that airline's site through the kayak results page is the $6 per passenger seat selection fee is waived. Note that this can change at any time - enjoy it while it exists!

Could you please clarify what you mean when you said "you can then change or move to different seats at any time without paying an aditional fee"? Do you mean that if I've already gone through Kayak and made my seat selection for no charge, that later I can just go through my account at AT and change the seats we chose for no charge? And, if that is correct, can we do that even at the 24 hour mark to choose from seats that weren't available when originally booking? Or did I understand what you said all wrong, lol? Thanks!

Also, does anyone know, if they do put out another $25 coupon at AT that can be used for flights after Dec 18, like in Jan of 2010, would you be able to use these towards the fee they charge for checking a bag? That would be good if that is the case and they release a new coupon, I just missed the current one! Thanks!

You understood correctly. I don't know about changing at checking since we have never done that. But I am sure you could do that. We always try to get as close to the front as possible and be on the left of the 717 aircraft. If our first choice isn't row 15 we go back and check regularily and try to move our selections. Once we get to row 15 and the choice we want, we don't bother to change at checkin.

I am not aware of any new coupons yet.

Well, that's good to know so I will keep an eye on things and see if we want to move up at all at the 24 hr online check in. I didn't realize it was possible to change at all. Yes, I like to be upfront also. Do things change much from original booking time and the day before the flight? I would think that they'd stay the same but it sounds like they might easily change. I think we have row 15 one way and row 16 the other way. So do they actually open up the rows 10 thru 14 at the 24 hr check in? Is it crazy online at that exact 24 hr check in time usually(it'll be about 8 am at 24 hr prior)? Do I just log in to do check in and I'll find the place to try to change seats? I wouldn't mind like row 11 or 12.

Also, on the hopeful chance if they were to release a new coupon code thing, does anyone know if it could be used towards the baggage fees? That would be awesome but I suppose they probably don't let you do that, lol!

Thanks very much for your helpful answers, I appreciate it very much! :)

I believe you can also see what is open in those first four rows if you fake through a booking using the higher priced coach fares. The problem with booking those front seats is you may get bumped back to a different seat if they need to seat people needing assistance there.

I know that you can't use those coupons when checking in on-line to upgrade of for baggage fees. Some people have had success using them at the AT counter at their airport, but for the most part the coupons haven't been accepted at check in.

Hmmm, that's good to know about the seating. I didn't know that they could bump you back if they want to though. Something to keep in mind I guess, that's for sure!

Well, if coupons come out I guess I can just try to see if I can use them at the counter! Doesn't hurt to try at least!
Thanks again, I appreciate you answering! :goodvibes
