Aida, the musical.....

Thanks y'all! :thumbsup2 As a "chocolate" person can I assume by seeing the word Nubian the majority of the cast will also be "chocolate"?? :p I suppose it just depends on the area it's casted in.

In the original opera, most of the characters are Egyptian. The Egyptians invaded what they called "Nubia" (probably the Sudan) which was Aida's homeland. So there would probably be many "chocolate" characters but not all. I've seen the Opera a number of times (and played in the Orchestra for it) but I've never seen the musical (though I have the soundtrack - which is pretty good).

I saw it 5 years ago on tour and I still listen to it... saw it twice in one weekend actually!
As for the race question, the Egyptian characters are generally played by white actors and the Nubian ones by black actors... Not sure how it would be handled if it were produced in an area where this would be harder.
It's a great show!

Appreciate it, thanks! :sunny: I did find a website and saw a wonderful mixture of cast members, I'm excited! I've heard the current soundtrack done by Elton and Tim and it's AMAZING! I will be owning it, if not BEFORE I see the musical! :goodvibes

I SAW IT TONIGHT!!!! (LAST NIGHT, THE 12TH) IT WAS INCREDIBLE!! I can still see and hear the characters in my mind. I talked to a few of the cast members and told them they were INCREDIBLE. The lead, Aida, was my age, 37...she was OFF THE CHAIN!! The other lead, Radames, was only about 22 and those two were amazing on that stage together. And the ending...what a way to die...together like that, I would do it for the one I love. (only highlight the missing text if you've seen the musical or haven't seen it and don't mind a spoiler)
If I could see that show again I would. Love how Tim and Elton give it a "hipper" tempo with the music. LOVED IT!! So glad I chose this summer to do a OWC musical. I'll probably go to sleep now and dream about it. :goodvibes

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I saw it while it played Broadway, and totally loved it. I saw the opera twice, and enjoyed it, but the play was more fun.

Missed this the first go around, but saw it this morning. I saw the original cast on broadway. All my DH and I could do was talk about how we'd love to take our kids to see it some day. It is DH's all time favorite musical.

Last July we had the opportunity to see it with our kids, in the second row center, in Ogunquit, ME, when we were on vacation. I thought the man who played Radames was even better than Adam Pascal.

So often now, when I hear Written in the Stars, I get teary eyed, picturing the scenes from the musical. If our broadway theater league schedules this in its next line up, we'll definitely see it again, and we'll buy tickets for my parents to see it, too.

I'm so glad you liked it! :dance3: :dance3: :dance3:

I've seen it many time on Broadway (with Toni Braxton, Debora Cox, and of course Heather Headley). I always wished Disney would have animated version as it would be nice to have a princess of color (not including Jasmine) that girls could identify with instead of a Snow White or Cinderella. However, it would have to be pg-13 (sex, violence, high fashion, reincarnation). :cool1:

I as well saw it many times on Broadway and with Toni Braxton and Heather Headley!!! What a thrill.

HEATHER HEADLEY is FABULOUS!!!!!!!!

A professor from the university left me a copy of the soundtrack that I picked up at work today. I finished listening to it about 10 minutes ago, and it was INCREDIBLE!!! I was in my car crying. Seeing the musical I can visualize the characters singing the songs with all their emotions and actions. Tim Rice and Elton John are BAD!! :teeth: I'm humming the finale in my mind as I type this right now. And MY STRONGEST SUIT is an awesome song! :cool1: It's a soundtrack I'll have to listen to when DH is not in the car, it's just not his thing. I hope I get to see that musical sometime again VERY soon!
