This afternoon I was walking around my yard trimming a few long boxwood growths. My daughter (8) wanted to trim some so I said SURE! She got carried away and cut the dead iris blooms about 3 inches below the dead bloom on the stalk. She didn't get them all just a few of the iris, but are the ones she cut history? Will the bloom again? Help! :confused3

TIA!

There are reblooming irises now, but I don't know the sort you had, so it's hard to say. Most of the older ones are once-blooming, so now you might have to wait until next year.

Were the stalks spent, or were there still buds on them? If the stalks were spent anyway, there was no harm in cutting them.

I'm sure the irises I had are once-blooming. They were bulbs my great great grandmother planted that were given to me.

I guess that stalk was spent. I didn't notice any other buds on the cut parts, just deadheads.

I also saw that some of my hyacinths got cut too. On the stalk. Are those also a loss for this year? I love those.

Yep, 'fraid so. Hyacinths actually form the flower in the bulb over the course of the previous growing season, so it won't send up another until next year.
