Age Requirement

How strict is the age requirement for RunDisney races? Is proof of age required? We are planning on an event this year and while my daughter will be old enough her friend that was going to come with us turns the minimum age 3 days after the run. They both run track at school and I've got no doubt they'll breeze through the run ... I'll be lucky to keep up with them ;-)

Thanks!

They don't Id kids so the only verification is the date you enter. If you decide to have them run then Backdate the bday ( remember the date you use as you'll need it for waivers)

I personally waited for my daughter to run the half. She runs track (distance) too but an event with 25000 other runners is daunting. She did great but we spent a few events preparing her and making sure it was a positive experience.

My kids have run many Disney races. They have always shown ID to pick up races packets for 10km and longer, just like an adult. My daughter in particular has had her birthdate carefully checked. The one ID she likes to use because it is smaller and easier to carry then her passport has the date on the back and you have to look for it carefully.

Back when there was a TOT 13km, my daughter was old enough (12) but was turning 13 in a month, at first the person miscalculated the year and thought she was 11 turning 12, and called a supervisor over. It was straightened out.

Yikes!

Why not write runDisney and ask? I would much rather get the answer I do not want than to get caught up in a snare of 'lies'. I think that the age requirement is fairly firm but like all rules, I am sure they can waive it, especially in the case of a 3 day miss. The only reason they could/would not waive as I see it is if the insurance underwriter is the driver. But I also see lots of 10 milers out there with entries at 10 and older as well.

Also, for the record since there is a conflict above, any person who is a minor (under 18) does not have to sign the waiver or show ID. They can show one if they want but the parent is the responsible party. Note there is a slightly different that is pushed down for minors.

Interesting. I've never even brought my kids to packet pick up. Those handing out bibs are volunteers so I can understand inconsistency. I sign the under 18 waiver therefore from a liability standpoint it's on me not my daughter.

While my daughter happens to have legal id: passport, not all kids do. It would be pretty tough to enforce.

I have seen races make exceptions to the age requirement if there are certain requirements met. I'm sure in certain circumstances where a minor doesn't meet the age requirement, but runs track or cross country on a regular basis may be eligible for an exception. I'm sure there may be some kind of proof that is necessary that they run track, but I agree it is better to contact RunDisney and try to work it out ahead of time just to be safe.

In the greater scheme of things three days shouldn't matter.

I wonder if having a record of manipulating application age for a USA Track and Field certified course, would haunt a young athlete's vitae.
