Well... out of curiousity I was checking out the 5k information next year and found out that they will now have an age limit. You must be at least 8 years old and able to maintain a 15 min per mile pace in order to compete. I am glad now that DH and I decided to take a year or two off of the Disney marathon. Michael would be heart broken to find out that he wouldn't be able to participate in the 5k again. Especially since he did the hard work to make sure he could reach the pacing requirement.

I guess Disney is trying to cut down on the number of participants in the 5k and possibly shorten the amount of time they need to have the area closed. I don't know but that is what I assume.

I don't remember if I read or not but how did Michael do in the 5k? I am sure he did great.

This seems to make sense because the kids races are up to 8 years old. I would guess they are trying to limit the number of strollers I keep seeing at the race. They have always had the 15 minute pace but haven't seemed to enforce it for the 5k.

I wonder if it had to do with some parents pushing
their younger children too much to finish faster.
here's one example of what I saw...
There was a man running with his daughter,
she was probably about 7ish. They just made it through
the turnstiles of AK and she was definately struggling
with the pace. He kept yelling at her to "keep up" , but
she didn't look like she was in shape enough to keep up
and definately was not having fun. He ended up leaving
her behind with her huffing and puffing and really walking
slowly that you knew she was exhausted. I stopped, checked
on the girl, talked for a bit with her and then she said that
she was ok and that she just wanted to walk the rest.
I let the CM know, and headed on my way.
I saw a couple other parents pushing their children on
a little too much in my opinion,
but nothing like this guy:sad2:
For the most part though, the families I saw were cheering
their kids on, stopping when they needed to and it was a
great site to see such happy families doing a fun, healthy
activity together!!!!!

Michael did really well. I was so proud of him!! The only downside is that I had left my watch at the hotel, and our plan of running for 4 walking for 1 went out the window. It came down to me picking something out of the crowd and us trying our best to keep running until we got there!! I think that was a little hard on him, because I couldn't say "just 30 seconds left" or anything like that. Once we reached the 1/2 way point he was on a roll. He would stop to catch his breath and then take off running as fast and as far as he could. He did an amazing job!!

So glad to hear Michael did good. I know how hard he trained for it. I hope he had fun.

that is so awesome that you had such a good experience together. my DD did the kids race (she is only 4) and she was THRILLED to have her very own bib number and was telling everyone she was going to run with mommy. watching her beam at the finish line with her very own medal was priceless.

My daughter also ran the race and really enjoyed it. She is 11. I do agree that the 5K is no place for a stroller, especially the ten dollar umbrella stroller that some guy went screaming by me with. Poor baby, the noise from the wheels spinning was enough to make me go deaf, I wonder how the kid felt, not to mention that it's unsafe. A jogging stroller is one thing but an umbrella stroller? Come on! Almost as ridiculous as the pregnant woman that complained because she slipped getting on the TTA. Well if she wasn't wearing flip flops...........hmmm
