Can the fashion conscious of the DIS please let me know what is appropriate attire for an outdoor afternoon wedding (ceremony at 3pm) followed by an indoor reception at 5pm?

BTW, I have my own opinion on this, but apparently I'm in the minority locally. Thought I'd open it up to a broader audience! :teeth:

TIA!

Is this soon and is it warm there? That would make a difference for me. For winter, I would do something totally different. I'd probably do a sundress in a lighter color (not approaching white) or a cocktail dress of some sort. If it was colder, I'd do a darker color, maybe a sparkly sweater and skirt or something, around knee length.

Sorry; assume summer wedding, temps in the range of 70+.

Mal,

If it's a afternoon outdoor wedding, mid 70s weather, I might wear a nice skirt/blouse combo or perhaps a semi dressy suit. Probably in a light color, considering the time of year/weather. Maybe a pretty, strappy shoe too. Especially if the reception is indoors at 5 PM.

I certainly don't think long is appropriate unless it's something lightweight and flowery (rather than a gown style). And stay away from heavier fabrics and darker colors. I would think light and bright. Of course, if you have time in between the ceremony and the reception, you can always change into something more dressy, depending on whether this is Saturday evening or not (I think Sat evening requires something dressier).

What types of conflicts are you hearing from people? I'm on the East Coast and made the mistake last year of wearing a black, just under the knee dress (sleeveless) w/ an attached long jacket to a July wedding (it was indoors but the ceremony was outside on the pier). I was so hot and since the jacket part was attached, I couldn't take it off. I should have gotten a nice skirt and top w/ a removeable jacket and I would have been better off. This was at a fancy restaurant with a view of the NY skyline, just to give you an idea.

Hope you find something you like.

I would personally go with a pastel suit or dress, something similar to what I would wear on Easter Sunday.

i don't own any pastel dresses/suits.

my normal summer late afternoon wedding wear is a black dress with white and pink accents. it is around knee length and sleeveless. i think it is perfect for those summer weddings that start in the late afternoon/early evening and have evening receptions. i would feel strange going to an evening reception not in black or something draker, but maybe that is just me.

So basically what I am hearing is, cotton capris and flipflops are NOT appropriate attire. Neither are polo shirts, cargo pants, or t-shirts. Right?

Don't get me started...

I'm gonna tell you what I'vve been seeing. (not what I do)

People are way too casual for the wedding and then get ridiculously overdressed for the reception.

I hate this. I'd rather wear a nice silk or linen dress that serves for both, but I think the trend (in as much as I've noticed) is the other way. I'm stunned by how casual people are for church, and just as stunned as how they dress up as vegas magician assistants for parties.

hehe I take it this is what you're fighting? I would definitely agree that none of those are appropriate if that helps anything.

Noooo....do people really think this?

I am in the dressier sundress, cute skirt and twinset, or a summer business suit camp.

A light dress (mid-calf length) that can have a jacket or dressy shawl added for the reception?

Something in street to tea length

dressy sundress
linen sheath dressed up with a silk scarf
pretty skirt and tinset
dressy pantsuit

Something you'd wear to Easter Sunday Mass (or imagine someone wearing if you aren't Christian.) might be a good way to think about it.

Let us know what you decide.

Anne

I'd say for ladies a nice sun dress with either dress shoes or very nice sandals, for guys dress pants or khakis with a polo shir or dress shirt with collar.

But that's just me!

Absolutely, unequivocally, no! Maybe a nice polo with dress pants if it were a very casual wedding, but a shirt & tie would really be better.

If the wedding were on the beach, then possibly. :teeth: Not really, I'd still wear a sundress and casual sandals.

A springy/summery dress is what I'd wear.

Sounds like you need to educate some people, Mal!
