After Hours Ticket Help

We have tickets for Villains After Dark for our first day and then a 5 day ticket. Do we use our Magic Band for entry to VAD? Im confused because I just read Disney's system could get confused and might 'charge' me a day's admission, or is this just if I try to schedule fastpass on the VAD day?

Sorry, if this is a newbie question. I'm used to Disneyland and all this research has got me feeling lost!

We recently went to an after hours, went through the marked turnstiles, got our bands. It took our regular park ticket and not the after hours ticket. We just went to guest services. They scanned all our bands, looked at everything and then gave us back the day that was accidently used. It was in the form of a 1 day ticket that they prioritized to use the next day we were going to be in a park. We did not have any fastpasses associated with the after hours ticket.
