After taking off a year, we decided a couple weeks ago to renew the AP's and take a few trips this year. My little ones are only little once, and every time the cute little question of "daddy when are we going to Disneyland again?" I felt more and more obligated to get them back.
At first, it didn't seem like much had changed. We immediately went to our favorite area of the park, New Orleans Square. We stepped into the Golden Horseshoe, took a seat upstairs and I went down to grab us some food (I was a bit saddened to find the cheesesticks gone from the menu!). As I'm carrying the food upstairs, the big earthquake hits. And while many at Disney might not have felt it, it was noticed by everyone in the saloon. So barely an hour into our visit, we have some excitement. And because of the quake, Big Thunder Mountain and the CA Rollercoaster will have just an added sense of danger every time we're on it.
Without too many more boring details, here's a quick summary.
1) Park still looks great. Ride lines tolerable. Foursquare and MouseWait are two GREAT iPhone apps to use while at the park. Foursquare lets you get tips on nearby places while MouseWait can keep you up on wait times.
2) Have a dinner reservation but you're starving with two hours to go? A couple trips through the tortilla factory and the bakery will get you some free samples to tide you over.
3) The salad at Blue Bayou changed, the wedge salad is gone
However, the tradeoff is they upgraded their meat supplier recently and the steaks are 10 times better than before. We had a fantastic waitress and a waterside seat, the best experience we've had yet.
4) The only negative we had on the trip was an extremely rude cast member over in California Adventure named Adena. It was only worth mentioning because 14 months earlier, we witnessed this exact same woman in a completely different part of the park being snappy with children, while dumbfounded people in the line were calling her "Atilla the Hun". However this time she was quite rude to me and my wife as we rode a ride with our daughter. Kinda sad, as this takes a little bit of the "escape" out of the Disney experience for a few moments.
5) I love staying on property, but the Anabella is a great alternative. (As is HoJo's, you can't go wrong with either). We arrived way too early and still got checked in without problem. Room service is still top notch and well worth the money.
See you next time, Disneyland!
