My DD school is having a celebration with singing and a play for their PTA night. We are not sure what type of snack to serve.
Christmas we had chocolate chip cookies, Thanksgiving we have apple cider and pumpkin muffins.

Any suggestions of what the PTA could serve as a snack??

There is really no such thing as "African American" foods....

There are many cultural types of foods and regional foods, for instance,Southerners eat different foods than Northerners. All my life I thought "soul food" was all "ours" until I moved south and found out it was more of a regional thing than a racial thing.

Frankly, I would not concentrate on the subject matter at all. Bring whatever you like.

Maybe I should not have called it African American food. I think they are looking more of an African food.

Does this make sense? (sorry I do not know much about Africa)

When I was in AK doing the AKL Sunrise Safari tour, they gave us this elaborate African theme breakfast. One of them is a fruit 'stew' inside a pastry-covered pot. Kinda like a beef stew but substitute with fruit. Very delicious. You may be able to get a recipe from AK or AKL.

If you look on the Recipe board, recipes from the AKL are often posted there, or you could ask there and people will glady help you. I know that the food served there is supposed to be authentic African cuisine. :D

What are the children celebrating? Is it this month or next month?

Maybe you should just have cookies, muffins, coffee and juice.

Yes, there really isnt a African American food....

I had friends from Nigeria/Kenya/South Africa (yes, two totally different parts of the same country.. but it was "interesting" food)

Personally I don't think goat stew/fried insects would go over well in a PTA meeting...

However, Chapati may... I tried to make chapati once and I don't think I made it correctly...

But personally as well... bring whatever food wise, I don't think it personally matters.

I was going to say the same thing as everyone else...that I wasn't aware of any foods that were 'african american'. I agree with Robin, that the differences in food choices are more regional than racial.

Thanks for the clarification, MrsPiglet! I answered this and turned off my computer last night!

on www.allrecipes.com there is a wonderful recipe for African Chicken Stew.. its on the first page.

It sounds easy, and I may make it tonight.
