Does anyone know the story behind why the ground in Harambe is in such disrepair??

I don't believe there is one. My understanding is that they based Harambe on the look of typical towns in that part of the world.

2 years ago DD was doing a report in school on Kenya and we went to Africa in AK and did an extra credit scrapbook. We pretended she was actually in Harambe and took photos at different locations and then scrapbooked them. We spent all day in that one part of AK and met and talked to alot of the CMs there. All of them told us that Disney's AK was so much like the real place. They were so pleased with recreation.

I took my close friend and her 4 year old daughter on their first Disney trip in May. She is from Somalia and has lived in the US since 1991. She was speechless in Harambe (and believe me, that's quite a feat!!). She said it was unbelievable how much it really looked like an African village.

Here's a funny thing that happened while we were in Harambe. We were waiting for our fastpass time for the safari and decided to take a rest in the little "Harambe School" area near the safari entrance. There were 2 CMs there from South Africa and my friend struck up a conversation with them about Africa and the different countries. My friend is a self-described 'news junkie' and knows a lot about the historic and current events of african and middle-eastern countries. My friend was up in front of their map, pointing to countries and talking. Eventually the 2 CMs sat down in the seats, while my friend taught them several interesting facts about Africa. Soon other guests starting sitting down and listening. Before she knew it, she had a full audience.
