I want her 13th birthday to be special but I can't afford anything too fancy or expensive. Any ideas?

My friend's dd just did a Sips N Strokes type of party. Here, there are lots of places where you can go to an art studio and you are walked thru the process of painting a picture.

My friend had canvases and paints and someone to instruct the girls to paint a small picture. It could be a cross, peace sign, flower, whatever. They did this at their church in a large room, but really, if you just had a few, you could do this at home.

Their costs were low, just paint and canvases. Then there were crock pots with soup in them. It was a HUGE hit with all of the girls.

This may sound expensive, but doesn't have to be.
You could get a priceline hotel near you that has an indoor pool and if it had free breakfast, that would be even better.

You could check into the hotel, they could swim and do "spa" stuff like their nails, etc., have a sleepover, have the free breakfast and head home.

I say a makeover, sleepover. My dd had this when she was 13. We got some stuff from Bath and Body Works and the dollar spot at target and did foot soaks, facials, nails and such. We rented 2 movies from Blockbuster and they had a great time! As goodie bags they got little things like nail file, nail polish, a foot manicure kit.

When dd turned 12, I took she and about 8 friends to a Japanese Steakhouse. Kids 13 and under were only charged $13 each, and they got just as many courses as adults. It was really fun!

I second the sleepover hotel pool party. I'll bet you can get something good on hotwire. Check out www.betterbidding.com to see if any hotels regularly come up on there in your area.

My DS's bday party is tomorrow...we are doing an at home movie party. He is 11. That might be fun for girls too....lay out a red runner for the "red carpet", take poloroid pics, etc.?

I think sleepovers are typically pretty cheap. You can make it super cheap by renting redbox movies. How about make your own pizza & decorate cupcakes or cookies? Then do mini makeovers, some movies & you're done!

Kohl's has little mini mani or pedi sets or polish kits that would be cute as party favors. If you get a code & have a Kohls card, they are really cheap!

When is her bday? DD15 is having a candy bar for her Sweet Sixteen slumber party & most of the candy was bought on clearance after the holidays. We got take out boxes from the craft store & they are decorating them. If it's after Valentine's, you'd be set!
