Been to Disney 4 times the past 2 years. Love it, but need a break! We are looking into a ski trip for March of 08. :thumbsup2 Would like to use points. Who's done it? Where did you go? :confused3 I prefer a Colorado or Lake Tahoe resort. I notice Sqauw Valley and Keystone are available in the concierge category. SEVERAL resorts are available in the world passport. In Colorado alone : Beaver Creek, Aspen, Vail, Steamboat springs. Never, ever, been. ( I have but wife and kids never, ever.) Also, my son is 4 1/2. Is he too young. Personally, I think he would do great! Thanks a lot......................

Haven't ever traded out points to use for another vacation, but we're big skiers so I'd love to know what you get and how it works out.

I don't think 4 1/2 is too young to get your son out there. I got all of my kids on skis at 2 - 3 years old, and at 5 they were ready and have enjoyed ski school. My kids had the benefit of being used to the snow and skis before we put them in classes, and even then the first morning of the first day required a little adjustment (it's hard, it's cold, strange teacher), but by the afternoon of the first day they were fine. Our youngest is 4 1/2 and we'll be putting him in ski school for the first time in January.

All our kids ski and snowboard, except our 2 yo and 10 month old. 4 1/2 is definitely not too young, so long as he has no diaper/potty issues. All the ski resorts will have ski schools with certified instructors available for your child.

As for where to go...well, we're biased by our location, but we truly believe Utah has the greatest snow on earth. Every time we've tried skiing elsewhere, we find ourselves annoyed--not enough base, too icy, whatever...

As for using points; you can try to trade into one of the following:

Iron Blosam Lodge • IBL
Snowbird, Utah

Marriott's MountainSide • MOU
Park City, Utah

Marriott's Summit Watch • MSW
Park City, Utah

Park Plaza • YPC
Park City, Utah

Westgate Park City Resort and Spa • WGC
Park City, Utah

Wintergreen at Midway • WNT
Midway, Utah

My opinion is that the two Marriotts and the Westgate are the nicest resorts of the above choices. Iron Blossam is also a nice resort and being in Little Cottonwood Canyon, rather than Park City, will usually have the deeper base and more powder. Wintergreen at Midway will be quite a drive from the skiing, unless you are looking for cross country.

Or, for an amazing luxury experience, you can use your points to book Stein Ericksen Lodge from the Concierge Collection in Park City. We love, love, love Stein! Be sure to try their chili, too. It's delicious!

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about Utah skiing!

First of all, 4 1/2 is certainly not too young to start skiing. Many resorts have classes (NOT daycare) starting at 2 - 2 1/2. (The only thing I don't like about those kiddie classes is when they snake their way past me on the slopes!):rotfl2:

We have skied some of your choices, and IMHO, some are great for kids and beginners and others are not. The ones we've skied are Vail, Aspen, and Snowmass. We've also done Breckenridge, which we loved, but is not on your list.

Breckenridge is our favorite, for several reasons. The resort is very skiable, with all sorts of terrain and wonderful facilities. But the best thing about Breck, to us at least, is the town itself. It's a real place, with real people -- not like the pretentiousness of Vail. The only negative about Breck is the altitude. The base there is 9,600 feet vs. 8,100 feet at Snowmass. That difference gives some altitude sickness, or at least discomfort. (Wherever you go, I would certainly do some research on altitude sickness, because it can be quite serious.)

I would avoid Vail with kids and beginners. It just has too many places where green runs are crossed by blues and blacks, and that's a dangerous situation for beginners. It's also pretty cumbersome to get around. Beaver Creek (which we have not skied) is in the same general area and is much more family-friendly.

The Aspen area is a great place for beginners if you go to the right spots. (See www.aspensnowmass.com ) Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands are the wrong places for beginners, but Buttermilk and Snowmass are nearly perfect.

Buttermilk is 3 miles from downtown Aspen (with frequent and easy bus service) and it is almost exclusively an uncrowded beginners mountain.

Snowmass is 9 miles from Aspen and is a huge mountain with all kinds of terrain. It has some of the best beginner skiing I've ever seen and a great ski school -- starting with 2 year-olds. There are very few advanced runs crossing beginner runs and it's a great place to start.

I have not skied Steamboat, but everyone I know who has raves about the place. It's also quite family-friendly, from what I've heard, so I'm sure there are good kids lessons there.

We have also not skied Squaw Valley, but we've been to Lake Tahoe and visited Squaw Valley several times in the summer. My impression of SV is that it's really a long way from anywhere. It's in a rather isolated area, with nothing around except the things in Squaw Valley itself. It looks like a great place to go if all you wanted to do was ski.

If you narrow your choices down to specific hotels, I'm sure someone here has stayed in them and can give you good hotel-specific advice.

Although I am no expert, I wonder whether you are starting too late for a March 2008 stay at anything other than an concierge collection hotel or a timeshare through a private trade. March seems like it would still be prime time for those locations and the inventory in Interval International was probably snapped up last Spring or earlier.

You may have some success by joining the Timeshare Users Group (tug2.net) and looking for a private exchange with someone who owns a ski week but is now thinking a week at WDW would be a better choce for 2008.

Best of luck -- Suzanne
