Advice - Taking walking cane on rides

Good Afternoon Disers,

I'm hoping someone can help answer a question for me. We will be travelling with my MIL this October and she sometimes likes to bring a walking cane that converts to a little stool with her if there is some waiting around.

How to the cast members handle canes on the rides? Will she be able to bring in on with her? Is there somewhere she can leave it?

Any ideas?

I'm thinking she may only have it with her in the evenings to wait for the night time shows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried a search but came up empty handed.

she should be ably to take it on every ride. Also a plus is that it is considered a disability and you can use the disabled entrance on a lot of rides, all of them in fantasyland in fact. Sometime that is a blessing and sometimes not lol. But that can also cut down on her standing time because you usually don't have to walk as much in the disabled entrances.

Thanks for the info. We don't need the disabled entrance, it's just nice to know she can bring it with her.

Some of the disabled entrances have places to sit, or would let her sit on her chair there. I have one of these cane chairs and it is pretty much impossible to use in an ordinary line when the wait is long because I'm moving it all the time, so if she doesn't feel like standing just ask the CM where she can rest until it's time to ride.

Thanks QueenElinor,
Have you been able to take the cane/chair on rides too? Sorry to bug, just want to give my MIL some comfort so she understands she can bring it.

They'll let her bring it. There are no rides at Disneyland that disallow bring stuff on rides (not like at Universal). She'll just hold onto it. There are no places in the line where she can leave it; often you get off the ride in a different spot than where you got on.

The one thing you guys might want to look at is if she can do stairs. If she really can't, or it would be better for her if she doesn't climb them, you can stop in at city hall and get a Guest Assistance Card that will cause the CMs to direct your group in a way where stairs are not an issue. Off the top of my head, stairs are a problem at TSMM, Big Thunder, sometimes Tower of Terror, CA Screamin', and Indy. There are probably more. Of course, she woudln't be able to experience Tarzan's Treehouse at all, if she can't climb stairs, but for the other rides there are other options.

If she goes through the disabled entrance, she will be able to leave it and pick it up when she gets off. If she uses the regular entrance, she generally would not be able to do so. Be advised, however, that you will wait longer for most rides at DCA if you use the handicapped entrance.

Even through the regular entrance you can hand the cane to a CM and they will hold it for you until after the ride. My husband uses a cane and he has had no problem at all with the regular entrance and either keeping the cane or handing it off. He recently got a cane with a folding seat during our WDW trip and that was no problem at all for rides/lines there also.

I take mine, as the pp's have said. The CM's are GREAT about holding it if I don't take it with me, and it always magically appears when I get off! Makes for some fun CM interactions!

this is what I meant as well, I have a hard time standing in the ques due to constant stop and go, so it is nice to be able to sit or even stand in one spot if I can for the wait.Though I was actually told to use disabled entrance a few times in fantasyland, so just be prepared.

I also went with someone with a cane and they brought it on almost every ride and held it with them. I think they left it off to the side for soarin over california to avoid possibly dropping it, but you can bring it on almost any ride, you just might not want to hold onto it for some of the more wild ones.

If she has any trouble standing or walking, I would also recommend using the handicapped entrances. That's what they're there for.

I remember CM asked husband if they wanted to place his cane on his EVC instead of taking it on the POTC. We did use the Handicapped entrance as husband needed extra time to board the ride. Maybe they ask there?

So you are aware CM will stop a ride so a handicapped guest can board. We enter thru the exit area so when you hear the announcement please stay in your dune buggy -- or one like that --- it is usually a guest that needs extra help or time in boarding ride. Since Disney husband can no longer walk unless there is a roll on roll off ride offering such as in the boat at its a small world.

Thank you to all the posters for the information, suggestions and first hand experiences!!! :worship::cheer2:
