Hi all,
My friend was due to fly out of Gatwick today for her first ever trip to florida the airport has closed due to the snow leaving her stranded in the airport. There are no hotels in her price range she can go into it and the Travel Insurance said she is not covered is that really right ??? If plane doesnt take off tomorrow - the virgin staff are saying thats very likely she loses all her money - Im sure she must have that wrong :confused3
Any advice appreciated

I dont agree with the previous person. For sure acts of God, some are not covered. But I have worked in insurance and it depends on what has happened and to what.

I have found the following info: You dont say whether it is a package or they booked flights only?

What if my flight is cancelled?

According to EU regulations, if your flight is cancelled within seven days of departure, you are entitled to a full refund.

A refund is payable within seven days of the departure date, according to the Air Transport User's Council, and applies to any parts of the tickets not used.

If you agree to be re-routed, either as soon as possible or at a later date, the airline must reimburse the cost of a transfer if it doesn't transport you to your original destination.

What if it was a connecting flight?

The AUC offers this advice to transfer passengers: "If it is a connecting flight and you have already made part of the journey and do not want to continue with it, reimbursement of the total price of the ticket (including parts of the journey not made if the flight is no longer serving any purpose in relation to your original travel plan) within seven days and a free flight back to point of departure."

What about the cost of extra hotel nights or forfited hotel and car rental bookings?

You are not entitled, under EU regulations, to reimbursement of any other components of your trip such as hotel and transfer costs, says the AUC.

What if it was a package holiday?

If you have bought an ATOL-protected holiday from a travel agent, the agent will take responsibility for rebooking an alternative holiday if your flight is cancelled. Alternatively, if you are stranded abroad, the agent or relevant tour operator will organise alternative flights or hotel accommodation.

Do I get any compensation for the incovenience?

The airline is not entitled to pay compensation if it was caused by circumstances that are beyond its control, which includes adverse weather.

What about costs incurred while my flight is delayed?

The regulations are not clear cut in this area, with assistance depending on the length of delay and length of the flight. Passengers should be given meals and refreshments, two free telephone calls, emails or faxes and overnight hotel accommodation and transfers where appropriate. The full details are listed on the AUC website.

Can't help with question about insurance but think if I were in your friend's position I would pay a hotel on my credit card rather than spend the night in the airport

Thanks guys !!
Its a package holiday she has booked through expedia and they are telling her that after tomorrow they basically wont rebook again !!! I feel so sorry for her and cant actually belive thatthatis the case !

I believe it is because of the airlines in that if they delay again you are talking of all the other flights that have been postponed too which causes a knock on situation. So I think their policy is like that.

if they d accept my CC i too would pay for a hotel;)

Your friend is probably already in a hotel now but what about YOTEL at the airport. I believe they are quite good for price.

From Virgins own site - it looks like they refund the flight cost but to the travel company so it would be most unfair if the travel company did not pass that on:

It is our intention to carry passengers to their destination at the earliest opportunity when our flying programme has fully resumed however space may be limited and it could take some days before all passengers are accommodated. The following alternative options are therefore also available to passengers:

A Refund of unused flights, if travel has not commenced.
All refunds will be credited to the original form of payment. Passengers requiring a refund should go back to the point of sale.

Re-book/Re-route to a later date
Take a Virgin Atlantic flight to your destination at a later date convenient to you, subject to availability in the same ticket class and seasonal supplements being paid. If the new fare is lower the difference will be refunded.

Re-book on a Virgin Atlantic flight to/from another destination
Subject to availability in the same ticket class. Any additional fare cost will be charged. If the new fare is lower the difference will be refunded.

General Conditions

Travel must be completed within ticket validity or within three months from the original flight, whichever is longer.

The return flight, if applicable, can be re-booked at the same time.
Passengers on through tickets involving other carriers must notify us before travel commences. Passengers with connecting flights issued on separate tickets must make their own arrangements with the other carrier including the payment of any additional costs and amendment fees.

Passengers on package holidays must refer to their tour operators who may not operate the same policy. Passengers should also be aware that any applicable refund would only relate to the airfare portion of the inclusive package and not the whole cost of the holiday.

We offer our sincere apologies for the inconvenience and disappointment this situation has caused we will update our website as more information becomes available.

Thanks guys Im going to pass all that on to her. She is on her way back home now as the flights have been cancelled for today also and the flight tomorrow is fully booked !!! Not sure whatthey are going to do now but at the moment they are travelling back to weymouth for some sleep !!!

What a nightmare, feel so disappointed for them.
