I have been living in my house for a little over a year and now that I actually have a yard I want to start growing roses. There is a spot in front of the porch that had these overgrown bushes. I removed these bushes. This spot gets about 4-6 hours in the sun in the morning and gets some late afternoon sun.

I always hear people say that it's so hard to grow roses. Is this true? What do I have to do? What makes it so hard?

I am new to this, it's the first time that I have my own yard to make these decisions!
TIA!

Glad to hear you're giving roses a try. They are so rewarding. I don't think they're hard to grow but they do need a bit of attention. Sounds like you have enough sun. They like well drained rich soil, regular watering and rose food. They don't like wet feet (overwatering). I would suggest reading first then buying. There are many different varieties to chose from with different needs. The internet is a fountain of information also. My favorite group ishttp://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/roses/

For best flowering, you'll need at least 6 hours of sun a day. There's some low- to no-care roses out there now, such as the Agricultural Canadian series, and rugosas and rugosa-hybrid roses actually detest any sort of fussing. They're also taking all the fuss out of many sorts of shrub roses, but like Deb says, they all like rich soil, regular moisture, and good drainage (except for the rugosas, which like lean soils).

If you find you have a little too much shade for most roses, try one called 'Zephirine Drouhin', an old-fashioned bourbon climbing rose that does well in lower light.
