thinking of gifting DH GPS for Christmas. He has been talking about Geocaching. Advice on good model?...any deals out there?
Thanks!

I didn't know there was a special type of GPS for it. My DH has an app for his iPhone, and he uses that.

When we geocache at the MN state parks, we borrow their equipment, a Garmin eTrex...its yellow and pretty easy to figure out even for first timers.

Go to geocaching.com and there all tons of reviews on products and also you can look for caches depending on location.

I think on the community board somewhere (you may have to look a few pages) there is a geocaching thread...the people who posters are pretty helpful.

does he have an iphone or a touch?

If so like above poster said there are geocaching apps and even geocaching podcasts.

Apple has refurbished 2nd generation touch(s) on sale right now or consider a 32 gig 3rd generation touch maybe.

i have a gramin etrex legend hcx. got it this year from amazon. We really love it and find that geocaching is a great family hobby.

We use a Garmin Venture HC for geocaching. It has a geocache mode and the color screen comes in handy for easier viewing. It also has a USB connection which lets us use the plug-in on geocaching.com to download the cache waypoint directly to our Garmin GPS.

I have a Garmin 60CSx and I love it. When I bought it, it was one of the most highly recommended units on geocaching.com. I haven't had any complaints or problems with it in the time I've been using it.

I've heard mixed reviews about relying on the iPhone for geocaching. Most people I know use the geocaching app for information about the caches they are looking for, but use a separate GPS for the actual coordinates. I don't know if it's because the iPhone's coordinates aren't as exact or if there's some other reason. The iPod Touch won't work at all for geocaching, unfortunately.

I agree with jme829 that your best bet is probably to read the reviews and suggestions on geocaching.com to find what most people are recommending lately. Also, if you are looking for other gift ideas and your husband isn't already a member, you should consider getting a membership to geocaching.com. It opens up all sorts of addition features, and there are many caches that are available to members only.
