Advice on a Beach in Cozumel

we are thinking of going to a beach in Cozumel for our western cruise. there is one listed in the excursion booklet but its $$$. Is it worth it or should we go it on our own? dh and I did one on our own for our honeymoon but we cant remember the name. It was alot of fun but the cab ride there was very scary. TIA. lisa

I haven't been, but I am planning as well. From what I have read, most people say to do it on your own. DCL prices are overpriced and there are lots of beaches and places very close.

We just returned from the 3/26/05 Western Itinerary. Not sure if this will help you out or not. We did the "Fury Catamaran Sail, Snorkel & Beach Party (4-4.5 hours)" thru Disney.

For us, this excursion was ok. I was expecting it to be like the Golden Eagle Catamaran in St Maarten on the Eastern Itinerary and was a little disappointed in that respect.

I highly recommend the Golden Eagle on the Eastern, but would only recommend the Fury Catamaran on the Western, if you are there primarily to snorkel. I'll go into more detail in my trip report, but we were not impressed with the beach they took us to (anybody know which one it was?). The beach was very crowded. The water was not at all that pretty aqua color we saw at the beach in St Maarten on the Eastern. There were no chairs, only rubber mats. We had very little time on the beach.

The crew on this Fury excursion is fantastic and helpful and fun, just like the Golden Eagle, but we loved every thing about the Golden Eagle excursion so much more. Unless I was into snorkeling more than "beaching" I would not do this Fury Catamaran excursion a second time. Edited to add that the crew on the Fury is exceptional. They do everything they can do make sure you have a fun, safe, memorable, time. That's what I will remember the most.

We would love to try one of the beaches on our own next time, but the crazy taxi stories I am hearing will probably prevent us from doing so -- I like safe drivers . I wish those beaches that everyone raves about had their own (safe) transportation from the pier to their beach.

Can't speak from experience, but on other boards I've heard rave reviews about Paradise Beach. From what I understand, it is free to get in, and food/drink prices are reasonable. It is only about 5-10 min from the pier by taxi (I remember seeing the entrance on our way to Playa Mia).

Maybe someone else has been to Paradise Beach and can provide more details...

We did Paradise Beach on our own in September. It cost $13 per taxi to get there. There is no admission to the beach, but they are now charging $5 per person for the water stuff--trampoline, floats and iceberg. This was a great day. We had lounge chairs and a waiter who brought us what we wanted to our chairs. The food was excellent, and a good value. There were taxis waiting at the entrance to take us back to the pier when we decided to leave. The taxi ride was exciting, but not nearly as scary as the one we took in Vancouver two years ago, or the one in the Virgin Island.

We weren't able to go to Castaway Cay on our trip, due to Hurricane Jeanne, so this was a great substitute.

We went to paradise beach during our stop in Cozumel and it was GREAT!!!!! Use of the beach, chairs and umbrellas were free. If you want to use the floats, snorkel equip, water trampoline or iceberg its only 5.00 pp fpr the entire day. They have waiter service on the beach and their food and drinks are very reasonable. My husband and I spent the enitre day there with lunch and drinks for about 50.00 including the taxi ride. They have a website... it is http://www.paradise-beach-cozumel.net/home_pbeach.php

We did the Fury at Cozumel (snorkle, beach party) and thought it was great, I do agree with Tink.....The Golden Eagle on the Eastern was better. But any day on a beach in November when it's snowing in Chicago is good! My DDs are 15 and 13 and the 15yo loves the water the younger doesn't like to swim with fish. She sat on the catamaran and listened to music while we swam then got off for the beach party and body surfed. The water was pretty rough for snorkeling so keep that in mind......

One correction--tramp and water rock wall are free! $5 wristband is for snorkel gear (w/ deposit), raft or kayak.

Most places on Cozumel (including Paradise Beach) advertise the use of purified water. If they didn't, word would get around and their business would suffer. Tourism is the main industry so they are very careful about this. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it.

Stick w/ bottled beverages (love that Sol beer!)
We did order a chicken wrap that was delicious & we felt fine.
