I've been teaching at the same college for 5 years now including my PGCE year, its in a deprived area with students from bad backgrounds who can be very dusruptive, don't want to learn etc. I went for a job interview today at a school that is the 4th best in the country and was offered the job, but only on a one year contract to cover maternity leave. They did say that at the end of the year they usually then offer a permanent contract but in this economic decline can't say this for certain. The new college is also futher away from my home, I live 5 mins from my current job. I'm so torn over what to do, I'm worried that if I take it I will then be out of a job next year, but it would look amazing on my CV to have worked there. I am happy where I work, its a very relaxed college with lovely staff but very limited progression for me, plus the college is very financially unstable.

What would you do??? :confused3

Personally I would take the new job, it offers a new challenge & as you said will look good on your CV. Yes at the moment the contract is only for a year but you could always start looking at other options next year before the contract is up. Worse case scenario would be that you have to sign up to teaching agencies if your don't have any luck.

Good luck whatever you decide

I agree with Nicky- go for it!! reading between the lines Jen I think you know its going to be the right thing for you to do, so do it and see what the yr holds for you! :goodvibes

I agree with Netty. It sounds like you want to go, but you're a bit scared to make the break. Take the plunge! :thumbsup2

I would say that u need to go for it. Life doesn't give us too many chances so we need to grab them when we can. It may sound harsh but Is there anything to say/guarantee you'll still have your current job in a years time?

What's that classic line.... Something about only regretting the things u haven't done rather than the things you have done?

If you're good enough to be offered THIS job I'm sure you'll still be good enough in a years time for a new post (if needs)

go for it 

Jen, I would say the same as the others - you absolutely have to take the plunge and go for it. The worst that can happen is you don't get a permanent contract at the end of it but you will have had a year's experience at one of the best schools in the country. And who knows, something even better might come along in a year's time.

I'm with everyone else- you have to take the opportunities that arise :goodvibes good luck!

I agree with everyone else, go for it ::yes:: as it sounds like a great opportunity :wizard: Good luck with your decision

I agree with eveyrone else, you should go for it best of luck with whatever you decide :goodvibes

Thanks everyone :goodvibes

I'm 99% sure that I am going to take it, I just want to clarify a couple of things with them first. I feel sick with nerves! :upsidedow
