I know this is discussed ad nauseum, but I would really appreciate some advice on choosing a UY. We tend to vacation most in June, September, and October however a huge reason I am looking to buy into DVC is so that we have the flexibility to take a trip for my children's birthdays which are late Feb and early March. I'd also like to be able to go in November/early December. Based on this I was thinking of choosing a December UY so that I could have the points for December travel and to plan ahead for trips in other months. Of course I'm also completely confused when I start to think about going right after thanksgiving through early December and how I would work it.

Pick your UY based on having to cancel a trip unexpectedly. Since you can't bank you canceled points during the last 4 months of your UY, choose a UY that would protect you for the majority of your travel dates.

No one UY will protect all the months so you have to decide which months are the least likely in terms of travel.

Having a UY in which most of travel falls within its banking window allows for the most flexibility. A Dec UY works but does leave the months of Sept, Oct, and Nov. as the most vulnerable in case a cancellation happens. You would be beyond your banking window so any points would expire Nov. 30th.

Plus, you mention going end of Nov/early Dec.so I don't think Dec UY is most ideal. I think that a June UY would work as well. This would leave mostly March, April, and May as the most vulnerable months.

Banking deadline is January 31st so even those February trips would be covered (since you have to cancel at least 31 days in advance to avoid holding). It works for your current travel times as well as most of the future ones.

as the others have said, the only thing about UY month is that it makes a difference if you book late in your UY and have to cancel.

remember that you can book your home resort at 11 months out and other DVC resorts at 7 months out regardless of your UY.

always start planning by figuring out what UY you are travelling in:

if you have a feb UY and are booking a stay in june 2012, your 2012 UY goes from feb 1, 2012 to jan 31, 2013 so it is in your 2012 UY. you can use 2012 pts, banked 2011 pts and borrowed 2013 pts to book that stay starting as early as july 2011 at your home resort.

if you have a dec UY and are booking a stay in june 2012, your 2011 UY goes from dec 1, 2011 to nov 30, 2012 so it is in your 2011 UY. you can use 2011 pts, banked 2010 pts and borrowed 2012 pts to book that stay starting as early as july 2011 at your home resort.

Thanks for all the advice. Now I just have to keep an eye on the resale market to find a contract that works for us.

I think an August or September UY would work well for you as you can bank through the end of March/April. It would mean that a cancelled June trip would be problematic, but the rest of your probable vacation months are covered.

We have a Feb UY and it's really worked out well for us. Our travel habits tend to fall around Feb and April school vacations and in all liklihood, summer months. :scared1: We plan on going at Christmas one year, but since the kids are getting to school age now our fall trips will be backburnered. We tend to be in "borrow" mode anyways so banking hasn't been an issue for us yet. Best of luck with your decision!

Don't do the Dec UY! I have a Dec UY and it stinks. We prefer to travel in the fall and I have to remember to bank my points by July 31st -- right smack in the middle of the summer when I'm home with the kids and in the middle of softball tournaments and visiting family and such. Just missed my window this year and now have to rent my points out. Ugh! If I only would have known...

btw--you're in Staten Island? I grew up there :)

Oh wow I never thought of that! I've decided to look for something in the spring. I'm sorry you missed your deadline this year. That's a super bummer.

Unfortunately, yes, I'm still a citizen of this disgraced island. :sad2:

Hahaha! :rotfl: Disgraced island? Apparently you've never been to the SI Mall at the height of the summer when the dump was still open :scared1:

Good luck with your purchase...hope you get a great UY!
