Ok, I'm one of those smokers that has been an EX smoker about 3 times...lol...I would quit for a day, then get drawn back in...and I tried everything short of actually going to the doctor for a prescription (but was on the verge of doing just that)....Well, I have now been (as of today) 4 months without a cigarette....and I did it through genetic modification 
No, not ME...lol...I found a brand of cigarettes called "Quest"...They come in three stages: Stage 1 has just about the same level of nicotine as a normal, light cigarette. Nothing special about that. Stage 2, on the other hand, was produced from tobacco plants that had been genetically altered to produce just less than half the amount of nicotine as stage 1. Stage 3 takes that final step...they've produced a cigarette that has no nicotine at all.
Well, by stepping down through these stages, I was able to get from smoking a little over a pack a day to being a non-smoker in less than 2 weeks. By gradually reducing the need for nicotine, while still smoking when and as I wanted, it let me get rid of the physical addiction first, then get rid of the mental habit at my own pace.
Now, I'm no shill for the company, but I've only seen these cigarettes in Rite Aid drug stores, so I wasn't sure how many people had even heard of them. I just wanted to share the idea, and the success I've had with them (BTW...They don't advertise as being a "Stop Smoking Aid" because that would require them to get FDA approval, and they're still cigarettes...still harmful if you keep smoking them and therefore NOT likely to get FDA approval). So if you are like I was and wanted to quit but didn't really want to face the battle that came with quitting, check them out.
