My wife and I are thinking about buying into the DVC program. Before we do we decided to test the waters by going to BLT with our 3 kids (6, 3, 1) from Dec 13-17. To really give it a whirl, we are going to try to prepare more of our meals in the rooms. Anyone have any tips or links to things that we should keep in mind - either for food or other things?

Based on how it goes will help largely determine what we do. We are leaning towards buying a resale for the lower upfront cost.

Thanks in advance for any help/tips/advice

Rent a car for a day if you don't have one and shop at Publix or WalMart. Feed the family the same food that they are use to at home. Less changes means happier kids. :goodvibes

That is a good start. We live 9 hours away so we will be driving. I probably should have mentioned that.

Totally agree, I personally can't eat restaurant food morning, noon and night for any length of time. Also, depending on your accomdations, Studio/Microwave/Small Fridge or 1/2BR w/ Full kitchen will determine what and how much you need.

we are staying in a 1 bedroom suite, so we will have a full kitchen. Is there a thread where people discuss types of food that they have cooked while at disney? (sometimes it is very difficult to find threads like this). I really enjoy cooking but don't want to haul my whole kitchen along for the ride.

I am thinking foods that are either really easy to make or can cook in a crockpot - either way requiring little preparation or cleanup.

In the past few years we have gone to WDW several times, and have always gotten the dining plan. The upside is it is a lot of food.... which is, ironically the downside too. Sometimes, i feel like i order things and eat them just becouse it is included. Honestly, I am glad i do so much walking at WDW to help burn off what feels like a dozen desserts per day.

Again all advice is greatly appreciated.

Since you have a car, I would also drive around and look at all the DVC resorts. You mentioned that you are likely going to buy resale. Get a feel for the different resorts; look at their pools, their eateries, their landscape, their ammenities. Decide which one "feels" like home to you. This will help if you decide DVC is right for you; you'll already know which resort is for you.

One bit of warning, once you stay in a villa it is hard to go back to the hotel rooms for any lenght of time.

i realized this principle when we went on our first cruise. the room had a verandah.... yeah, that pretty much set the bar for all future cruises.

::yes:: This is so true. We stayed 5 nights at the OKW in a GV, moved to AKV in a 2 bedroom, then spent the last two nights at the POR. That was a shocker! ;)

I agree... take a tour of DVC resorts. If you do it with a DVC representative you may get some goodies... like extra fastpasses.
I highly recommend the Timeshare Store... they are great to work with & will make it a smooth process. Keep in mind... if you like another resort besides BLT... you could buy a resale there and add BLT on after you close on it and are in the Disney system. There may be add-on incentives again at some point. You could alternate where you stay each year via banking borrowing & you would have the 11 month booking at 2 resorts.

A one bedroom is ideal! We always have a 2br. I've brought my crock pot for big family reunions and you can't beat it!

Here's a thread on cooking in the villa. OKW has BBQ grills, I'm not sure about BLT!

Everyone is right, it's hard to go back to a studio when you've had a 1br.
