Hi, we are heading back to DLR next summer. We stayed at Disneyland Hotel in a resort/pool view room this pas July (Fantasy Tower). We LOVED DLH.

However, right now, all I can book for DLH with my best rate (CM) is a Concierge/Resort view, while I think the use of the concierge lounge will greatly help with quick mornings, drinks, snacks, etc. It is quite a bit more than booking a Standard View room at the Grand Californian for the same dates.
We really don't have a desire to stay at PPH.

My kids LOVE the DLH, and while the GC is awesome, it doesn't have as neat of a pool (important to the kids) and has a different vibe than DLH. We've stayed at AKL several times now, and I think they like how "different" DLH is (I do, too).

That being said, should I bite the bullet and spring for concierge at DLH? Will I be disappointed that I spent that much extra for it?

One of the things we like is evening appetizers. If you return for an afternoon swim, you can hit up the evening appetizers and enjoy a lighter dinner later in the parks. We like the breakfast already being prepared, even though it's just continental and light. They are also nightly desserts during firework viewing if you are not still in the parks. Is it "worth" it? If you are running a tight budget I say no. You can bring your own snacks and drinks for in room. If you have some extra spending money it would be worth it to me. I found it a nice treat that allowed our family (mainly the parents) to relax more than we usually do on a Disney trip.
