Advantages of Home Resort

Just purchased our first DVC. When we were looking, we reviewed all the resorts and evaluated the pros and cons of each. In the end, we liked them all, so we went with OKW because of the lower annual maintenance fee.

After reading some posts, I'm now curious as to what the advantages are of your home resort. After all, you can stay at any resort, right? So even though we purchased at OKW if we like BCV better, we can just book there.

Yes, I know, we're rookies here, so forgive me if this is a really simplistic question. But you all seem very knowledgeable, so I'd like to hear your thoughts.

The biggest advantage is the 11 month book window. There are certain room types (std view @ BWV, GVs at HH, VB) that are very difficult, if not impossible to book at less than 11 months. There are also certain times of year where it is difficult to book or change resorts at 7 months. For example, if you want to stay at BCV during F&W fest at EPCOT, you will probably have to waitlist booking at 7 months. This is because this event is very popular and BWV and BCV's proximity to EPCOT.

That said, don't second guess your decision to buy OKW. Its a fantastic resort and you really can't go wrong at any DVC. What I would recommend if you really want to stay at other resorts is - book at OKW at 11 mos, at the 7 mo window, call to switch the ressie over. If its available then great! If not, go on the waitlist - at least you will still have somewhere to stay if the waitlist doesn't come through.

You may want to consider if you'll want a GV and what peak season youll be likely to visit. Those factors should impact your home resort decision for that 11 month advantage.

OKW is the best of all the DVC resorts. It has the largest rooms, you can park in front of your unit, the lowest number of points, the finest room in all of DVC, the OKW Grand Villa, the dues are the lowest, and you have a greater chance of meeting me!!!

Many consider OKW to be the only 'true' DVC resort.
