i just read I can check in 60 days prior to arrival. I had no idea I could check in this early. I think I'm at 47 days now & I haven't checked in. Am I missing something by not checking in already?

Checking in early is just a way you can make requests like near elevator or ground floor or earlier check in than 3 p.m. etc
This is also the time you can hook your magic bands to a credit card on file etc.
This is also the way you can sometimes get a text on your phone saying your room is ready therefore avoiding the front desk.
We always have had good luck with this...and avoided front desk and headed straight to our room upon arrival.

OP, I think your question is: why check in online at 60 days prior rather than at 1 day prior?

I don't know if there are any advantages of doing it that early.

When it comes to room requests, I think a lot of people skip it at online check-in and do it by phone (1-407-W-DISNEY if staying in a hotel room, DVC Member Services if staying in a DVC room). The request options which show as part of online check-in have been glitchy. Sometimes you are offered options which don't even apply to your hotel. Sometimes you are offered no options at all.

I've checked in early and then found out later that our room request disappeared. I usually do online check in around 60 days out but then I like to go back into online check in about a week or two ahead of time to make sure the room request is still there. We have a trip in 16 days and the room request that I had selected from the drop down box two months ago had disappeared. I was glad that I had checked to make sure everything was okay.

I won't be using it at all. First of all, we used a travel agent who made our requests for us. Secondly, we are staying at the Polynesian for our 25th Anniversary, and we want leis when we arrive.

You can do online check in and still get your leis. You can just go to the front desk to get the hotel info and calendar. We love the Poly. Enjoy.

OP - There is no advantage doing it now compared to doing online check-in a week before arrival. The rooms are generally assigned 5-6 days in advance, so if you are planning on doing online check-in, you need to do it before then.
