Staying at CBR in Oct. Any advantages to arriving early in day to check in? I realize your room probably won't be ready til late afternoon but if you arrive early in day to check in (assuming you haven't done on-line check-nin) might you be more assured of getting your first choice for buildings and room assignments? Do they have that all set up before you even arrive or assign rooms at actual check-in?

Thanks for any input.

The advantage is your at WDW early!!! Even if your room is not ready you get your tickets (if you're on a package) and can hit the parks.

Checking in early does not hold any significance to getting your requests. Your room will have been assigned before your arrival.

However, with being there early you may be able to switch your room if the one assigned to you is not to your liking.

FYI, the last 2 times at CBR we arrived around 10AM and our room was ready. We did online check-in both times and notated our approximate arrival. Also our 2 requests were met both times.

I have used online check-in for all of my stays. I usually arrive around noon, so well before the 3 O'clock "Official" check-in time. My my room was not ready twice and even then the room number was messaged to me within a hour. Wether or not you use Online check-in, even if your Room is not ready all the rest of your Packet for your trip, Park tickets and other things will be ready for you.

It will speed thing up to use the Online Check-in, because that line in always shorter than the regular check-in line.

True and true. We only had one request (close building) when we booked our reservation at POFQ one year, and we arrived for check-in at 4:00 p.m. We were assigned to the furthest building from everything, and when I mentioned our request, was told that since we'd arrived so "late," others who had arrived earlier had already filled those rooms. So they had arrived in time to switch their rooms to better locations, and we arrived too late to do anything about it. The early bird truly does get the worm!

We have had great luck getting in early, but better when we did online check in. The one time our room wasn't ready we were paged not long after arriving at the resort. Usually we don't have requests for location, but I have always been pleased with the location of our room. Once we were even upgraded by Disney when we arrived, so they have always done well.

Sometimes the online check in line is longer. It depends on the number of people who are arriving when you arrive and which method they choose.

While rooms may be assigned in advance, Disney has a rooms available policy, so if you get there early, they can give you any vacant room, even if it may be assigned to someone who may arrive later in the day, as long as it's still within the category you have paid for, or they can upgrade you if that's a possibility for your stay.

For example, let's say you're staying at CBR and have a request in for a ground floor room in Jamaica. If you are assigned to a room that doesn't fit your specifications upon check-in, but there is a suitable room available that hasn't been checked into, they can move you to that room.
I imagine they can even pull rooms away from people who have checked in online, but haven't arrived yet.

If you arrive late, you will be limited to whatever rooms haven't been checked into by the time you arrive.
Basically, if two people are identical in their bookings, including their requests, and there's only one room available that day that meets their criteria, whomever arrives first will get the room. I don't think there's a difference based on how you check-in.

EDIT: I suppose I should mention that sometimes you may have to ask. If you are assigned to a room that doesn't meet your requests, you can always ask if one that does is available. Some CMs pay more attention than others, and there may be a room available that hasn't been checked into.

my worry is if i do online check-in but not arriving till late (9pm) that they will have given my request away to someone that wasnt happy with their room assignment and i will get stuck with the least desirable rooms.

From my point of view is that i paid full rack rate and did it 15 minutes after pkg ressies open up for booking but to get stuck with a bad room view after requesting a location area at booking time will not set well with us. And i didnt book std view.

fingers crossed but i dont know whether to wait till we arrive to checkin or do online ahead of time. I dont expect a specific room just a specific location..

suggestions???

In this situation, it's not going to matter much whether you do online vs. wait until you get there to check-in. If you are assigned to a particular room, and someone else who arrives sooner wants it, from my understanding they have the power to "take it away from you" whether you checked in online 10 days before or you walk up then. It is possible that they only pull from online check in rooms as a last resort, but I think they still have the option of "poaching" them for someone who is already standing in front of them.
I'm fairly sure that (unless there's a glitch in the system) they won't take a room from someone who booked a particular category in order to give it to someone who booked a lower category, but is unhappy with their room assignment.
So if you booked a Courtyard View at the Wilderness Lodge, for instance, they won't give you room away who hasn't already booked a Courtyard View.
If the category you booked was rare enough that YOU couldn't get a discount for it, then chances are very few, if any, others managed to get it at a discount, so you will only be competing with others in the same situation as you. I'm fairly sure they don't care how much a person paid for a particular room and they might not even be able to see that information or when someone may have booked. If changing your reservation to get a discount is possible, you should do so, because you won't be gaining anything otherwise. You won't be doing yourself any favors by convincing yourself that you're more entitled than someone else to a particular room, unless what you want is a bookable category.

Other than that, I'm not sure how room requests are handled anymore. I know you can still have things noted on your reservation, but they went to a computerized system and I can't imagine they have codes for every possible room request. When you do online check-in the only options they have are very general and similar to the requests they offer you at most hotels. (ie. ground floor, etc)

Just keep in mind that all you have the power to do is put in a request. It's possible that no rooms that fit your requests will be available at all for your arrival day. If you are very unhappy with your room, you can ask to be moved should a room that fits your requests open up.

In the two times I've stayed on Disney property, I've gotten my requests. The first time I booked a Pool View at AKL with a request for a king size bed. I could not have been happier with my location. The second time I stayed at CBR in a king bed room with a request for a ground floor location (no elevators at CBR) and a pack'n'play. We got both things, but we sacrificed a closer location. I still was very happy with my decision, because I knew what I was getting into. I could have booked preferred (same cost as king) and put in a request for a king bed, but the size of the bed was more important to me.

Keep in mind, that many people do not research their Disney hotels quite as much as we do around here. It's possible that the majority of people who pass through the Disney check-in process may not even know the details of what types of rooms are available, so the chance of them requesting a very specific room-type is low. It seems as if EVERYONE is very particular if you look around here, when actually we're a small fraction of the people who go to Walt Disney World. We're NOT the norm.

But what is your request? If it's general enough, you shouldn't have a problem. But if it's "corner non-connecting room next to the ice machine but far away from the elevator and vending machines", it ain't going to happen. If it's "high floor in building X", you should be OK.

And also, if you have a room request you just can't live without, don't do online check in. You would want to have a Cast Member's attention if things don't go the way you expect. The online Cast Members should just have to look at your photo ID, give you the packet and send you on your way.

I agree.

Thats what i thought. dont do online. What time of night do they consider you a no show? I know it does no good to call frontdesk because they arent really the frontdesk just a quest services CM on the line....

How should i notify them of late checkin? or do i need too even. ME is scheduled already.

FYI i requested "inner courtyard off lobby". I realize i may not get that and i dont mind the other inner courtyard views. i just dont want the courtyard view of VWL...

I don't think they consider you a no show until well after midnight (possibly not even until the reservations for the next morning roll over at 6am) so if you arrive around 9pm, you should be fine.
You can call and see if they'll add your late check-in to your reservation the same way they did your requests. Being booked on Magical Express probably helps, because they should know that you won't be arriving until later.
With their cancellation policy being the way it is, I doubt they get a lot of last minute cancellations. I also doubt they get a lot of people who walk up and try to get reservations.

I know it's easy to get caught up thinking the worst, but chances are everything will be fine. Keep in mind that what you may consider a "less desirable" room might be the perfect room for someone else. I'm not sure I would like an inner courtyard room off the lobby, because of potential for added noise.
EDIT: I guess I see what you're talking about though, because a courtyard view overlooking the villas isn't much better than the woods views nearby.

We requested bearface room because we want to walk out our front door to overlooking main lodge and we dont mind noise. Besides our dd grad trip celebrating her wildlife biology degree and loves bears.

We will be up later most evenings and no kids this time. We want to be in the middle of it all.

The balcony view is a bonus view from there in my opinion.

You are not considered a "No Show" until the next day (6:00AM). We always arrive late, usually betwen 11pm and 1AM. Once when we had car troubles we arrived at 3AM and our packet was already waiting for us. Before they take the computers down for the nightly backups and maintenance they will print out all the packages for ressies that have not checked in so far for that day. We have had a few times that checking in late got us a view upgrade, the one time I asked the CM said it was because all the standard view rooms were full. But I will agree that if you have a specific request like a corner room, that your chances are very slim getting it with a late check in.

So - with modest request and late (8:00) check-in, is there any possible advantage to online check-in? If so, does it still apply to CL?

I didn't get to read all the replies, but if you arrive early and check-in when you get there, there is more available room inventory to switch your room around to meet your request if need be. Even though room assignments are done in advance, they are very easily and frequently moved around when needed to accommodate guests who are at the desk. As someone who used to work for a hotel chain (not Disney), we did this all the time - particularly for this crabby guests who were complaining :rolleyes2

As for online check in, they will try to get you into a room that will be ready at your arrival time - not necessarily one that meets your request. IMO, online check-in is only beneficial if you are arriving at a busy check in time/day, busy time of year, have no requests, and/or you really want your room to be ready when you get there if you are arriving early. If you don't meet any of these, better not to do online check in IMO.

We were given an unacceptable location (upper floor - medical issue) because we came at 2:30 PM. We didn't think that was late. The resort did. We had been assured of a first floor location BEFORE we got there!

We moved to a different resort. No problem. I am paying. I am NOT going to put myself in a possible medical crisis. I don't go on vacation to put myself in harm's way.

I will mention the resort who HELPED US - POR. I prefer not to name the resort where I had a ground floor room promised, but didn't deliver. It would be a case of resort bashing, and I just don't feel right degrading a resort for one employee's attitude. The resort didn't do that to me, a person did! :goodvibes

You might have heard promise but what they said was different. Disney doesn't promise anything, why do you think they don't tell you when the magical enhancements for a ride will be( breaking down because if they did people would complain if it didn't open on time. This might not be your situation but I can say the " promise " was not said like that.
