Adults with braces? Update

Congrats on getting your braces on! I'd LOVE to get braces again, I still have an overbite even after wearing them for 5 years when I was a kid/ Just a little warning to you, DD13 got hers put on last week. She was fine that day and even the next morning, but about 24 hours after they were put on, the pain began. Just be sure and have lots of wax (the metal will cut up the inside of your mouth a bit at first) and have plenty of ice cream and tylenol on hand. The pain lasted about 3 days for her, but now she is fine! I can remember being in a lot of pain when I had them and only eating soup for a week. Not try to scare you, just a little warning.

I am actually hoping for that, sick as it is--I need to lose 13 lbs so this may be the way to stop eating.
Anyway, yes the inside of my bottom lip is killing me--and I havent really been eating anything because it feels so weird to eat with all this in my mouth.
I know you get used to it, thats what everyone tells me, it just seems so odd that this will ever feel normal. LOL

it'll all be worth it in the end! One of the 2nd grade teachers in my kids school got braces. She is probably in her 40's. She made all her students want them too. They tell her she looks SO cool!

My daughter(1st grade) came home form school so excited ot see me with the braces and she is so jealous! She thinks they are the coolest thing ever.I just asked my 5 year old son and he said They really look great mama! I liek them a lot!
So I have two fans anyway.

You know whats weirder? Is they start to feel SO normal, that when you get them off your teeth feel incredibly slimey and gross!!

They sell this wax stuff at Drug Stores you can smoosh onto the braces where theyre causing hot spots, until you build up a calous there.... I'd get some.

Ibuprofen works way better than Tylenol. I'd go ahead and start taking some before they actually hurt. I got mine put on Dec 19th, and they didn't start hurting right away. It's better to get ahead of the pain because it takes longer to stop hurting if you wait. For the first couple of weeks, I took 4 ibuprofen 3 times a day. I weaned back eventually to 2 tabs once a day. Now I just take as needed. Also, take a couple before each adjustment!

Dod your ortho give you a kit w/ wax, brushes, etc? I like that wax better than the GUM kind at the store. My ortho will give me as much as I want! I haven't had to use it lately, but I suspect that will change when I get a new archwire. If you gargle w/ warm salt water once or twice a day, that will toughen up the skin in your mouth and heal any sores you do have.

I know, isn't it cute how little kids think braces are cool? Here we old people are getting all embarrassed over all this metal on our teeth and the kids think it's awesome! I've even had 3yo's ask me what the "tings on your teef" were, then ask "can I have some?" And a couple 7yo's I know are so excited to be getting braces in a few years.

I know I hated mine for awhile because they hurt so bad for the first month; I couldn't eat anything that required chewing, not even sandwiches. But now I'm used to them and my teeth are so much prettier! I even find myself admiring my bite! I'll bite my sandwich then look at the nice, smooth, round mark and think "How could I ever think that ugly crooked bite I used to have was normal?"

Thanks, yes I got the kit and am using the wax a lot!

So far no pain(though I do have Vicoprofen left over from my tooth extraction so if it gets realllly bad Im set LOL!) just my bottom inside lip hurts from being scraped by the braces(why are they so rough anyway).

I used the wax, but took it off to eat-also my teeth feel weird when I eat, not pain, more like pressure-but that I like because I want to eat less--anyway so now I have the wax off because I thought if I keep putting it on my mouth will never get used to the roughness.

Thanks for the tip about salt water, I am off to do that now!!

I got my invisiligns in June! Love them! And my overbite is almost gone already. I'm so happy I spent the $4300!

I got my Invisaligns (top only) in July and I like them a lot better than the traditional metal braces I had in college. Already the two teeth that I wanted fixed the most are almost back to where they should be. They should be off my early June, meaning less than a year of treatment and then a retainer to wear at night (and I will wear it this time-not wearing it faithfully in college is part of why my teeth moved-the other part is the evil ortho who moved my teeth too quick). They cost me $900 since I got the family discount at the dentist's office (my brother is a dentist and he did the molds, etc). I must say it's really nice to take them out if we're getting pictures taken and such. Plus it's nice to brush and floss normally every day. And the best part is they are soooo much less painful than regular braces. And if the pain from a new tray should get pretty bad, I just take it out and give my mouth a bread for a half hour or so.
