Adult Acne Sufferers...Antibiotics

I just realized another new thing i started taking the end of October - Vitamin B12 Supplements since my b12 was low. Now i'm doing research that B supplements can cause bad acne - umm - crazy to figure out this puzzle - again i'm going to my dr. next week so maybe after that i'll stop the B12 and see - guess i won't really know till i get off the Doryx! I've been on it for 3 days now - the bad acne on my jawline seems to be calming down

If your B12 was low, they will probably say no to stopping the B12 because low B12 can cause permanant neurological damage. I have some permanent nerve damage in my feet because of low B12

I was prescribed this foam as well - just started using the last 2 days!

I don't use an oral antibiotic but I do use a topical one. I use evoclin foam which is clindomycin.

It works wonders. I don't use it everyday though....I only use it on my face when it gets really bad. But I also have severe eczema so using it everyday would not be good for me.

I have the opposite effect while on BCPs than the PP did. I am on oral BCPs and they help my skin a lot.

I have adult acne too around my mouth, jaw and hairline. I think mine has something to do with my long hair and shampoo. Wish I could find something that worked :( I can't keep my hands off them....constantly wanting to pop/pick them. Ugh!!!!

No i have not...i am going to see my regular doctor in another 2 weeks - i guess i can have them check my blood!

This was going to be my suggestion as well. My skin has been better in recent months (I use Mychelle clear skin natural cleanser then exfoliate gently with a Norwex body cloth AM and PM and take zinc and omega 3 supplements) but I was still getting some breakouts regularly. I went on a gluten free diet as an experiment for other heath reasons after reading "Wheat Belly" and found that after 2 weeks my skin was clear! I "cheated" for a party a few weeks ago and about 7 days later started breaking out. Those are taking a bit to heal but no new breakouts since I'm back on the GF diet. Even if your blood doesn't show celiac or gluten allergy etc you might try it. Allegedly it is blood sugar swings that really wreak havoc on skin in sensitive people. Costs nothing other than the intial pain in the rear re-planning your diet and if it doesn't work you've lost nothing.

I think i have been prescribed every oral and topical antibiotic under the sun over the years. Eventually had to go on accutane which worked 100% (though not without many side effects). The effects lasted about 10 yrs. Now acne's back and none of the prescription topicals working. Haven't gone back to oral antibiotics since they were so useless for me years ago. Surprisingly, proactive has helped. Definitely works best when I remember to use it everyday. As soon as I forget for a few days, it all comes back...

I don't have the best reaction to antibiotics, so that doesn't work for me.

What does work for me:
bcp
Differin cream
Spironolactone

I second this. Spironolactone was the only thing that kept me consistently clear. You have to be careful if you are child-bearing age, though - it can cause birth defects. I stopped it two months before I got pregnant. I will not hesitate to use it again if needed after this baby is born.

My b12 was in the low normal range - starated taking 2500mcg B12 Sublingual - i wonder if its too much - i only take it about 3x a week! i will be having it checked again next week - my husband was taking it everyday just because he wanted the energy from it BUT his B12 went too high so now he's off of it!

just got back from the Dermatologist.

She said if i am still breaking out that i should slowly go off the Doryx and she prescribed Sironolactone which i see many of u like.

I am to take 50mg 1x a day!

Can i ask those that are on it, any side effects? what dosage are u on and how long did it take to work?

Thank U!

I'm taking 25mg of Spironolactone twice per day (50mg total). I've been taking it for about 3.5 months and it is amazing. It took 3-4 weeks until my face was completely clear. I've only had one very small spot come up since then. No weird side effects that I'm aware of. I love this stuff.

I had some pretty bad acne the last couple years, especially on my chin. Nothing really helped until I started drinking about a tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar in a small glass of water daily. From then on I didn't notice any new spots and the old spots started healing and are now just about completely gone. I'm so happy with how my skin looks now and I love that the solution is cheap, easy, and natural.

hi,

just thought i'd check back in....

After going back to the Derm 2 weeks ago i started on the Spiro 50mg 1x day!

I am now on the Doryx (gradually coming off of it -- started at 150 a day now taking 100 for the last week and next week will go down to 50..

Also using the Cindymycin in morning on the affected area - and if i wash my face during the day

The evening i'm using the retin-A Micro 0.04% mostly every day

the Spiro i'm taking every morning with breakfast.

after starting the Spiro i still had 2 pimples come to a head yet again and got the bacteria out...seems like the affected area kept going and coming..anyway i feel like my jaw area if finally calming down -

i have another appt. next week

Hi Lisa. I just came across this thread. Acne is terrible at any age, but it sure feels worse as an adult. Looks like your doc prescribed the spiro. I was the only thing that worked for me. About 5 years ago I had a really bad bout of acne that lasted months, maybe a year. I haven't had it since my 20's. My doc put me on 200 mg a day along with Zithromax. Cleared it up in about 6 weeks! I still take 50 mg of the spiro every other day. I might get a pimple once a year now. Before tying the spiro as a teen, I tried everything, nothing worked or I would get chemical burns from the topical gels you mentioned above. I finally was diagnosed with polycyctic ovarian disease, the culprit for my acne.

Good luck to you!

Only thing I am aware of is that this is a potassium sparing diuretic. It will lower your blood pressure slightly and do its job as a diuretic (why you take in am not pm or you will up all night!). You should not take any potassium supplements and take it easy on potassium rich foods.

thanks for your input and sharing your experiences...(have fun in Disney :))

I have been having great success with raw honey. I've been on all kinds of antibiotics, creams, you name it. I've been on Accutane 3x's. The last dose of accutane worked and I had great skin for about 10 years, until I had kids. Then it went crazy again.

I am not comfortable with harsh antibiotics anymore so I've been trying homeopathic remedies. Someone on another board suggested raw honey.

I put raw honey on my face nightly. I leave it on for 1/2 hr and then rinse off. It has actually made a difference to my delight! It has also reduced the redness around my chin/mouth area from old acne scars.

i like Raw Honey as well - started using it a few months ago --- very soothing - it did not help with preventing the acne but i hear its also good for the red scars so i use it a couple of times a week!
