ADR rescheduling

On the day of an ADR, can you reschedule it to another day on your trip?
For example, today at 11:00AM, if we know we cannot make our scheduled ADR reserved at 4:00PM, can we reschedule that ADR to tomorrow or the next day without penalty?

The other part of the question is it seems this could be a workaround for the cancellation requirement of 1 day notice. We could be 30 minutes before our ADR, then reschedule for 5 days later. Then go in and cancel that reservation?

Just a heads up, I think that within an hour or two before you reservation, you might have to call to change your reservation. It might not be the case any longer, but I know that in 2018 and 2019, we had to call if we wanted to make a change too close to the reservation. This happened a couple of times when deciding we did not want the type of food reserved for that day.

YES! we have done this at least once every trip since reopening. I tried to call the ADR phone line and was on hold for close to 45 min. I them decided to see if i could just move it to another day and cancel and it worked and have done this 4 other times for multiple reasons

Sssshhh! Just kidding - yeah, this is why you will see last minute reservations for hard to get restaurants. The people knowable (edit: knowledgeable)/invested enough to get these reservations know this work around.

This happened to us as well in 2019.

Good to know. So I guess this technique can ultimately allow you to cancel your reservation the day of. And then also free up a spot for someone else who really wants it.

We missed an ADR a few weeks ago thanks to awesome Disney transportation. I was within 30 minutes of our ADR when I realized we wouldn’t make it, so I changed it to another day and canceled it.

This probably wouldn’t work for impossible to get ADRs though, since it would be hard to find another reservation to change it to.

So, it has to be for the same restaurant, correct? I can't change it to another restaurant on another day?

I assume it has to be the same restaurant, because the only options for modifying a reservation are editing the day and time and party size.

Correct. In other words, don’t try this with topolinos, sci fi, or oga’s.

But yeah, this workaround is one of Disney’s worst kept secrets.

As a courtesy to other guests who may have wanted a reservation, this is best done sparingly and only if you have a good reason to cancel same day.

I did this on our recent trip with a 3:45pm HBD reservation. We had gone back to the hotel for a break. While we were there one of the torrential rainstorms started. We were at YC & the boats stopped running. I assumed the skyliner stopped too, because it was raining so hard I couldn’t even see across to the Boardwalk. I wasn’t walking back to Studios in that. I checked the website & was able to get a LeCellier reservation for later that evening. So I went in & changed our HBD to another day & then cancelled. However, I moved it waaay out, because I knew there was almost nothing available for the rest of our stay. I actually just went to the end of the dates available to be booked & picked something there. So like 58 days away. I waited a little bit, maybe 30 minutes, then cancelled it. I’m sure I didn’t have to wait, just felt strange to immediately cancel, lol. No problem & no “no show” fee.

Wonder how long til disney closes this loophole.
