We are headed down for a week in September (got free dining today! Woohoo!) It will by myself, DH, DS, and my Mom. My IL's may join us - and if they do that would make a party of 6.

I made my ADRs a few weeks ago for a party of 6. Now the ILs are saying they aren't sure they are going - or may only come for part of the trip.

My question is, once we figure out who all is going, would I need to call dining and change to a party of 4? Or would it be ok to leave it as a party of 6, but just show up with 4? Would there be anything wrong with that? I'm totally clueless on this one... Thanks!

I've done the same thing in the past. In fact, right now I have three for six people just in case my dd and her boyfriend can join us. I have gone with fewer and then said that we would only have X number in the party. I don't know if that's inappropriate. If it is, I'd be happy to call once I know to let them know the party was smaller.

I'm looking for the same information, I just want to know if it is bad form to overbook if you will, and then cancel. And if so what is the procedure, how many days in advance, etc...

For the OP, you should call once you know the final number in your party to decrease your party size. But you did the right thing. Always make your reservation for the largest number of possible people in your party and then it's easier to go down from there.

However, it is always a nice thing to call and give the final number so the restaurant knows exactly who is coming. Who knows - maybe that spot for the extra two people could open up a spot for a nice honeymooning couple who didn't make a reservation.
