ADR and Cancelation Questions - Add Additional Guests Now or Later?

Hi everyone! I will be making my 180 day ADR’s at the end of the month. Right now, I know for sure 2 of us will be going, but will not know if 3rd member of the family can make it. We probably won’t know until about 2 months before the trip. Is it easier to book for 3 people now and cancel the 1 person (if necessary) from the reservations or should I only book for 2 and add them on to the reservation later?

Book for 3. If you show up with only 2,there will no be a penalty. You can adjust the reservation if you are sure there will only be 2, but if you don't or can't adjust it, you will still be able to go.

If you book for only 2, you may find that you cannot increase to 3 at a later time.

I highly recommend making the reservation for the maximum number of people that you might think are coming. It's generally easier to reduce your party sized opposed to trying to add someone at a later date. Especially in your case because you're going from an even sized party to an odd sized party, which means you'll generally need a larger table (e.g., a party of three is often seated at a table for 4, but a party of three cannot be seated at a table for a party of two).

Thanks for the quick reply. Is it easy to adjust the number of people DOWN in a reservation later via either the MDE app or online? I wouldn't want to tie up a larger table for parties that need it.

Maybe, maybe not. There may not be a table for 2 available. But only for 3 (actually it will probably seat 4). You would have to make a new reservation online. You could try calling.

Yes and no...you can try to adjust the reservation size down, but the system goes out and looks for another table for your new party size. If it finds one, it'll let you make the reservation with the adjusted party size. If it cannot find one, then you can't adjust the party size. If that happens, just tell the CM when you check-in that you're now a party of two and they'll make a note of it at that point. It's always easier to show up at the restaurant with less people than planned than it is to try and add someone on the spot.

even if you have a larger table they might not be able to seat more than your 3 at it as they have reached the amount of people allowed in at a time

It is always better to show up with less than to show up with more and not be accommodated.
