Adopting Through Social Services

I have a few questions....

DH and I began the process a few years ago to be able to adopt through Social Services. We completed a first round of parenting classes and had an initial homestudy. We were set to take some more advanced parenting classes, get fingerprinted, write up our "narratives", ect.

Anyhow, DH was struck by a car (he was a pedestrian). He had to go through numerous surgeries and spent over a year on crutches. It took almost 3 years for him to heal enough to go back to work. In the middle of all this we had to put this on the side-burner. We wanted to pick it back up after awhile but the caseworker (who was always so nippy with us-- I think she's dealt w/ too many bad parents in her day) suggested we waited until dh returned to work- because of the unstable income from comp/disablility/ect.

In the meantime, we bought a new house and moved to a new county, which was always in the works. We want to start up the process again, which since it's been 4 years, I'm sure is at square one.

I just remember they were so snide w/ us all the time. It was awful. I remember feeling like I was the bad parent who was neglecting their child. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what they went through. We really don't want to foster a child because I don't think I can handle them leaving after a year. We are hoping to adopt a younger school aged child or a small sibiling group. We're looking to go up to 7-8 yrs old- which might be too young still. I know there are tons of teens waiting for homes, but I really didn't want to start at that age.

I haven't fostered or adopted but ny cousin did in NJ not your state. The wanted an infant but indicated they would take a sibling also. They got there 2 daughters Nov 2003. 3 & 4 mos old at the time. March 2005 they started the adoption process and it was finalized Sept 2005. I thought that seemed pretty quick to me.

Good luck if you do foster/adopt it really is a great thing you are trying to do.

That does sound quick. The last time we started the process the intial home study, parenting classes, basic background check, and interview was all done within 30 days. It went very fast. We're hoping to pretty much just be done by the end of 2006. We are attending 3 refresher courses in January to re-cert. Then we have to have a homestudy again. However, our dining room is gutted to the studs and they don't allow that. It will be done by the end of January though. So by the time we're done w/ the classes we should be good to go.

We're really hoping to be able to add to our family by the end of 2007. Anytime before that will just be a bonus.
